More badnews from a source lacking credibility, but I'm sure anyone in beta could help confirm:
After the last beta build renaming the Water Elemental isn't possible. Also all of the WE names are back to "Water Elemental"
Was just a matter of time before that would happen.
I don't really see why Blizzard doesn't give custom naming abilities to all classes/specs of whom the pet is a crucial and iconic part, such as Unholy DKs, Frost Mages and Warlocks IMO, I don't see why it's Hunter only.

Because to each other class, the pet isn't really a pet. It's a tool that you use to succeed at your goals, not a lifelong companion.

/sulk Water Elementals got personality too :(
I will not forget the one in Sunrock Retreat, fighting the camp fire.

How is it a tool for Warlocks, Frost Mages and Unholy DK's, and a lifelong companion for Hunters? Warlocks start out with a pet from Level 1, and FMages and UDK's get them at Level 10.
And they all play a crucial role for those classes/specs as well.

I only speak for the Warlock part here:
lore-wise
, Warlocks are evil. They do not love their imps the way a hunter loves his dog. The imp is a tool that can be killed and re-summoned countless times; if the hunter's dog dies, he's lost one of his best friends.
Edit: I also don't think a Death Knight cares about his ghoul very much. $0.02
Lore-wise, 10 random persons can't kill a Dragon Aspect, revive themselves indefinitely or do half the things we can in WoW.
So I think Lore as an argument against custom pet names is a little flawed.

/facepalm
Some things you have to give a little leeway for game mechanics (10 people killing an aspect, reviving), and some are generally accepted as being a part of lore (like the names). Also, it's not 10 random people, it's 10 random
heroes
. We're not Scooby-Doo and a bunch of meddling kids.
Also, I could have sworn the reasoning for warlock minions not being renamed was confirmed by a blue as a part of lore, but I'm not sure.
Anyhow, here's my explanations for the pets.
Hunter: The pet is a lifelong companion for the hunter, as evidenced by the beastmastery tree talents (Spirit bond, etc.)
Warlock: Demons are merely a tool for them. The demons don't like it in Azeroth/Outland, but they have no choice as they were summoned by the warlock, and pulled from the nether into this world.
DK: Also just a tool. They were once champions of the Lich King. You really think they care about a ghoul that was once rotting in the ground? The ghoul's name changes every time it's summoned, so again, just a tool.
Mage: Just a water elemental they summon. Again, just a tool, but not with the same evil connotation as the warlock (mages don't command elementals to sacrifice part of their life to protect their summoner).
