I need to dust him off too. He was a pretty cool character. I really liked exploring how a former Priest of the Light might reconcile himself with both beliefs and express a certain morality through an amoral humanist religion.
I think I drew on Skreel a bit while I was... de-radicalizing (best I could think of) Amanda, though if memory serve they're still very much of different minds on the matter of undeath and the Shadow. I was hoping for a re:Cata RP to really sort of delve into a more vulnerable side of her without a group to back her up.

I think a lot of the differences in opinion between Skreel and other cultists was mainly just a difference of perspective on cosmological scale and the role of the Forsaken. The Shadow has the power to realize the wishes of many of the Forsaken, and being that the religion itself is primarily a Forsaken-centric phenomenon, a lot of cultists want to use that power against other races. After all, in the Forgotten Shadow, might makes right. Those with the power make their own morality.
But on the other hand, Skreel sees the Shadow as a reflection of the Light, and in fact an advancement past it. While the Light might be seen as the cradle, where its followers are sheltered and protected, the Shadow is seen as a method of realizing the power that is in mortals themselves. To Skreel, an advanced Shadow Priest can create their own heaven on earth, and has no need for the protection of the Light. So his mission was to spread the Shadow to all mortals so that man himself could surpass the need for the Light's protection and become god himself. Skreel sees the Forsaken as the Shadow's chosen messengers and examples of mortals who have cast off their own mortality and abandoned the need for the shelter and warmth of the Light. The Shadow Ascendants in particular become gods in form as well as content; they don't even resemble dead people anymore, they are unrestrained wills who make their own universe as they choose around themselves.
It's kind of a weird cosmology, but that's why I like Skreel. He's halfway between kind chaplain and Heaven's Gate cultist. He's less interested in wrapping the Light in reverence and mystery than he is in tearing away the guise of ritual and rhetoric to find the real essence of spirituality.

Amanda's own interpretation on that dynamic is a much more standard "balance" sort of ideal. Her take on it, though, is that Light and Shadow is directly associated with Life and Undeath - death itself is nothing, it is the absence of both. Because of this, she believes that to fully embrace the Light one has to be be alive, and for the Shadow one needs to be in a state of undeath - this largely coming out of how the Light is painful for undead to wield. This is pretty much her reasoning for what's going on with her in the Spires.
Separate but equal, would be her moto, with those who embrace the Shadow in life needing to cross over into undeath to complete their path to it. But both are completely necessary to the world - without Light one is forever lost in the darkness, and without Shadow one is blinded and burned by the glow.
They're two sides of the same coin to her, not anathemas to one another - she actually believes that it's Fel magic that is the true opposite of Light/Shadow; it burns and glow with intensity (Light) but feeds on the will and soul of the user/others (Shadow).
It's really weird to think about the Cult and the Shadow now that it and Undeath/Necromancy have been definitively separated by Blizzard, though. At least to some extent, I'm curious as if there's any possible reason for things like Light, Nature, and Fel to be placed next to one another.

Heh. Lich King. But if it doesn't work out or if it does, Cata will be the one to follow soon after.

Lick King?
How many licks does it take to get to the Helm of Domination at the center of the Icecrown glacier?

Thanks a lot! Now that that's out of the way, I have a lot more time for leisure writing, so I'm looking forward to integrating back into the forums.
