You guys are suggesting I only use Envenom when the buff has run out or it's about to run out, to maximize uptime, but if I'm spamming Envenom, it's gonna be up constantly anyway :S
Considering the buff only lasts 5 seconds or so, it pretty much feels like I have to spam Envenom anyway to keep the buff up. I just tried only using Envenom on a dummy when the buff had just run out, and I was almost using Envenom the same amount of times as if I was spamming it, considering the very short length of the buff.

Van -- imagine you're in 3.3.5 still. This is just for the sake of explanation.
Also, our definitions of spam may be different. :P
In 3.3.5, you had a limited amount of energy. There was quite a bit of regeneration from Focused Attacks and Relentless Strikes, as well as Overkill during burst periods.
With the exception of heroism/bloodlust times you usually could NOT energy cap yourself, and you aimed for the highest possible envenom buff uptime (with 4+ point envenoms, of course).
In 4.0.1 your energy pool is now much larger -- not in size (though free glyphed vigor is nice) but in terms of how quickly it recovers with both Relentless Strikes and Venomous Wounds. If you would be energy capping (120) by NOT using envenom, then it is better to use it, but your goal is still to maximize the time where you have the Envenom buff up.
this part you should know already:
When you use Envenom, you get a buff lasting the number of combo points spent in seconds that buffs your poison damage considerably from white and Mutilate strikes. It's nigh-impossible to have 100% uptime with this ability, especially with Rupture in the rotation, so you try to get the most out of the buff -- energy pooling when you aren't going to cap it.
tl;dr: Always be under 120 energy, but try not to clip Envenom.
OK man, thanks a lot, I understand now. By "spamming" Envenom, I did of course mean if I had 4+ combo points available. I wasn't spamming it with just 1 CB :p

they arent saying that.
letting the envenom buff be up without clipping it gives more dps than spamming envenom every 4+ cp . This is because while spamming lets the buff be up all the time, not clipping it lets the buff be up for even longer. Meaning more poison procs going off for longer.
so you get the same results as envenom spam but better/more efficient.

Well "Clearly" said: "our definitions of spam may be different" that's all. So I was just clarifying what I meant by "spam" :)

Just a quick tip I don't think has been posted yet on fights with adds (or multiple targests, ice blocks, spikes, etc): If the mob is about to die and you have combo points on it. Rupture. It will return the energy from all the ticks, often resetting your energy to 120/120! Much nicer than envenoming and having 8k overkill.

Let's say you're in a situation where the Envenom buff is about to run out & so is Rupture, and you have to decide which of the two to refresh as you only have enough energy at that moment for one or the other. Which of the two would it be more important to refresh, Rupture or the Envenom buff?
I only ask because there are times when both are about to run out, and I'm not sure which will be more beneficial to refresh. Keep it mind though, that if I was to refresh Rupture on the target, that would cause me to not have the Envenom buff up for another 3 seconds or so, due to energy, whereas if I were to refresh the Envenom buff, that would mean the enemy wouldn't have Rupture on them for another 3 seconds or so, also due to energy.
So basically, Rupture Vs Envenom Buff, which is more important to keep up if you have to make a split second decision?
Thanks guys.

just spec into mut and have a couple of questions (sorry I am a noob to this)
the vanish and garote is that something we do when? Only at start of fight?
is envenom only used to refresh slice and dice?

On the flip side, I also found that whether through weird changes in latency or actual game mechanics, double Envenoms were going off when I hit the button. I would hit a 4 point envenom and then immediately consume the Ruthlessness envenom without hitting the button more than twice
before the envenom cast
.It's the new "Spell Queue". I despise it. I've had more people die in 5 mans on my priest in 4.x so far than I did in the entirety of 3.x, because the game casts the wrong spell on the wrong target thanks to the "helpful" queue that Blizzard added.
If you only single-tap your skills, you'll never notice it at all, but if you're like the majority of people and you spam your buttons, you'll get &*!@ed by it quite often.

As much as possible, you use it early so it can come up again.
is envenom only used to refresh slice and dice?
Did you read this thread at all?

4. Muti x2 - 4/5 CP for SnD
5. SnD at 4+ CP.
I stopped reading right there. Please have a look at Cut to the Chase first before attempting to say anything about Mutilate rotations.
