Edit: Use this thread to ask simple questions to rest of the warlock community. Researching for information by your own accord is appreciated, but if you choose to forgo that option, please use this thread to ask your question rather than start a new thread. Thanks!
Seeing how 4.0.1 has just launched and Cata is less then 2 months away, the forums are going to get spammed with questions that probably don't merit the creation of a new thread.
While it would be better if people would post these questions in existing discussion threads regarding 4.0.1 (for example), perhaps it would be beneficial if we attempted to consolidate all of these simple questions into a single open topic thread.
This would have the benefit of reducing new topic spam, keeping a focus on existing topics that contain content that promotes discussion, and reducing the possibilities of thread derailing.
Any thoughts from the warlock community about maintaining such a thread?

A starcraft 2 forum I've been a member of for a few years has been maintaining a "Simple Questions" thread almost since its conception, it seems to work rather well.
Glad to hear approval from the Big Warlock himself!
Everyone, request for sticky so we can cut down on forum clutter
:D

Glad to hear approval from the
Big
small Warlock himself!
Also, my first simple question with probably a simple answer:
Affliction: does it suck as much at 80 as it does at 75? Atm i do 1.6k dps on a dummy with it, while doing 3.7 as demo...

100% for each class, each spec. Amount of mastery depends.
Youll prolly never hit it though.

LoL, I swear that pun wasn't intentional, I didn't give it much thought seeing how I'm a gnome warlock myself, so being vertically challenged is second nature to me.

They thought the same about arp... so there will be atleast one spec/class stacking it and become OP. Although thatd be easy to fix

regarding affliction at 80:
It's very strong yes. Dummy's provide a terrible way to judge output (for various reasons but a big one for affliction is lacking an execute phase) and how you perform at 75 has so little bearing on how the spec as a whole performs at 80.
Don't worry about it just get yourself levelled up! ^_^
regarding mastery caps i'm gonna quote a post i made on the rogue forum:
you get mastery RATING on gear and gems
that rating goes through a conversion to become the MASTERY stat
this rating conversion is the bit that will change/inflate with each level you gain.
on my rogue (possibly the same for all classes but i won't make any claims like that without really knowing) i have:
217 mastery rating
this gives:
4.73 mastery
which works out as:
0.0217972350230415
stat per rating at 80.
clearly there some rounding going on here and the 4.73 won't be the actual figure but 0.0218 might be a reasonable number to look at.
this increases my poison damage (i'm assassination on the ptr) by 11 + (4.73 * 2.5) = 22.825%
hope i've not got anything wildly incorrect there and hope it helps clear up some confusion.
also, combat's mastery gives 10% chance PLUS 1.25% per mastery.
so you're looking at 90 / 1.25 = 72 mastery to reach 100%
-is it certain that 100% is the cap? i know it's the logical cap but who's to say that 150% chance doesn't mean you will always get an extra attack and a 50/50 chance to gain an EXTRA extra attack ^_^
oh btw, at the level 80 conversion rate i mention above we're looking at 3303 rating to get the 72 mastery to "cap" combat
Back to warlocks
affliction gets 13.04% just for learning mastery at 80, then 1.63% per mastery
this means they need 53.34 mastery skill to reach 100%
Now, if we assume that the rating conversion is the same (
which may be a foolish assumption
but gives us a ball-park idea
i just checked the conversion rate IS the same for casters
) we would need
2446.8
mastery RATING to reach 100%
at 80
however, as i mentioned, we don't actually know if 100% is a hard cap. for affliction, getting 100% would double your damage so getting 120% would double it and then some.
clearly we can't reach these numbers at 80 and rating inflation will play a massive effect on the way to 85.
(btw, apologies for mistaking this thread for "ask a simple question, get an overly thorough answer" >.<
i'll aim for brevity in future.

the target dummies that DO drop in health will give skewed results just in the other direction. you'll have the DE buff to your output for the entire fight so you can't even simulate an execute yourself by only changing to DS later in your test.
dummies are great for practice but terrible for gathering data.
SE,
as far as i can tell there has been no change in this regard to 3.3.5.
the first SB and haunt both do other debuffs as well as the SE stack. another SB just does the SE stack and isn't worth it.

not to sound like a robot but its right in the faq foal...
quote from asa:
in 3.3.5 (and the entire life of the game before that) if you spammed corruption over and over it would never tick. each new cast of the spell would put the tick timer back to zero and it would never to get three seconds and produce a tick.
the change is that this no longer happens. if you spammed corruption in 4.0 the first tick would happen at exactly the right time, 3 seconds after the first time you cast it. however each new cast does reset the duration back to maximum.
with these mechanics you can refresh the duration to max before the last tick and completely remove any downtime on the debuffs.
you can do this any time after the second-to-last tick and not lose any efficiency. if you clip earlier then you will be losing ticks that you've already paid the mana for and also be spending more GCDs.
the exception to this "DO clip" rule is BoA which always does a medium tick after being refreshed. however its behaviour is so odd when it interacts with haste that it's too soon right now to give solid advice about BoA. we need more data.

hehe, thanks for the compliment.
typically the discussion in the threads that follow guides and FAQs would be about the guide itself. mistakes made, potential additions, that sort of thing. having a thread where people can say things like "what happened to soul link?" or "Can I do anything with this firestone in my bag?", which aren't very appropriate to a guide thread and don't warrant an entire new thread is a great idea in my opinion.
