Because the lame haiku thing is trite and saccharine, and amounts to nothing more than an effort on Blizzard's part to promote a product that, increasingly, doesn't promote itself. After all, Wowhead only has the authority to distribute the beta keys for the contest because of an agreement made for this purpose with Blizzard.
The lame haiku thing adds nothing of value to discussion. If players are inclined to engage in creative expressions of fan art, they shouldn't need a sponsored competition to do so. It's offensive to common sense and modesty in the same way Bouboille hosting a raffle for Twittering with him was.
It's "fishing for a compliment" on a grand scale.
Or it could simply... you know, be a fun and different way of giving out the large amount of keys Wowhead has gotten, rather than giving it out
completely
at random?

Don't respond to Aestu, the guy knows better then the rest of us peons; if he says it's for whatever he was ranting about, it is. /sarcasm off
Seriously, I know fun is foreign for you, but stop complaining about everything.

Giving them out on the basis of a haiku is randomness by other means - whether it's based off the system clock or a haiku, either way it's "random" in correlation to any potentially relevant variable.
You just don't get the point... The sole purpose of the contest is to add flavor to the randomness. Neither Blizzard nor Wowhead have countered that statement in any way. I don't see what you're trying to oppose in this thread, cause you seem to just want to disagree for the purpose of disagreeing.
Personally I didn't want to enter the contest. But all those who did got to do something they don't usually do. They also got to be creative, which I would say is a victory by itself. While people shouldn't need an incentive to be creative, anything which helps people on their way is welcome.
Just try to relax and have some fun once in a while. You know, maybe you would enjoy it.

Forums should not be advertising by proxy. The content should reflect the opinions and inclinations of the playerbase, not Blizzard's PR.
Good thing that's for the market to decide and not you, then. Everything is (or could be) a medium for advertising and PR, if the consumer allows it.

Aestu, I try hard to see your point of view on things, since you're clearly intelligent and well-spoken, which counts for something. However intelligence clearly does not always denote decency, since you apparently live to just whine about everything, and in the process obfuscate pretty much any thread you get involved in, to the point where people start saying "I forget what the topic was, but this guy's definitely a prick".
No company is going to turn down PR for a new product, and good PR is good PR, it really doesn't matter one way or another how you feel about it. However rather than randomly hand out beta keys a la Wotlk, they're having little contests instead. Not my thing, I couldn't write a good haiku if my life depended on it (Life depends, nerves jump, I fail...), but more power to the folks that get their poem-ing on and win something from it.
I thought you were quitting over Al'ar, anyway. Why're you still here if it all makes you so unhappy?

As to you being a pessimist, fair enough answer, but I'm also a pretty damn negative person myself. Thing is WoW is my outlet, my not-daily-irl-grind, but a grind (and most importantly, a game) I actually enjoy. So I take adjustments and developments in the game and roll with them, since it's just the evolving venue in which I spend my time and money. I guess I'm unable to understand why a person who sees even their main form of entertainment in such an un-fun way would remain with it, and further, try to spread that negativity among discussions of things not-doomsaying (like this thread). It seems either childish, or just hell-bent on making everyone feel as bad as you do, and in the end comes off as simply irritating, if not worthy of writing you off altogether as some kind of mutant supertroll.
Regarding Blizzard PR, that's a distinction you are making, not one that is true of all PR at all times for all reasons. If this were true TV commercials wouldn't exist. Hell, McDonald's hamburgers are still made of missing children just like they were 30 years ago and they're still slamming out advertisements. It's just the nature of society that PR is the thing companies do. My feelings on that (or society in general) would totally derail the thread were I to detail them, suffice to say they're pretty twisted and you might find you agreed with 'em.
But this isn't society, this is a video game, and it's coming out with a new expansion, and fansites such as Wowhead have a deal to give away keys. This isn't bad PR or good PR, really, since it's not even PR. We all knew keys were coming out, rather than randomly hand 'em off they're making folks get at least semi-involved in the game's highly vocal community fanbase. That's interesting, not bad.
Lastly, all companies want to make money. Blaming them for an aggressive promotional campaign (of which, this is not) is silly to begin with, especially in regards to a new product. Which even fits your standards; WoW is being refined, revamped, and retuned to be better than it was before, essentially a new game. That's worthy of advertising.

They want good PR.
This isn't bad PR or good PR, really, since it's not even PR.
Exactly what I was going to say.
Beta testing doesn't even work as advertising medium anyway, since the unfinished product is more likely to turn people away than draw them in. Besides, people with no previous experience of the game simply won't understand that the new tentacle boss monster has a scripted 'burrow phase' that should be triggered by its declining health, rather than by the tank using Heroic Strike or Maul - i.e they can't offer accurate reports on their play testing, so Blizzard would gain nothing by enticing them into the beta.
I know nothing about car engines, I don't even drive. If someone offered me a competition to go work for BMW I wouldn't even bother entering. By the same token, telling my brother (who doesn't play WoW) about Wowhead's haiku contest would leave him wondering why the hell I thought he'd care.
I can't say I generally have a problem with threads getting derailed, but seriously...Wowhead haiku contest = advertising WoW? 0.o
It's advertising
Wowhead.com
more than it's advertising WoW.
Or it could simply... you know, be a fun and different way of giving out the large amount of keys Wowhead has gotten, rather than giving it out completely at random?
Gonna have to go with this, I'm afraid. I don't see how it could be seen to be anything else.
Also
Hell, McDonald's hamburgers are still made of missing children just like they were 30 years ago
Rofl. Thank you :D
