Cataclysm Beta Contest Haiku Voting Thread: Final Day!
Return to board index
Post by

I liked a lot of the entries that were picked for the voting, congrats to those who were chosen.
In the future, though, maybe a joke contest would be better? A lot of the Haiku's were silly in nature, and it'd be easier to pick a set of jokes out for people to vote on, because then it would just be a question of "Funny" or "Not Funny".
A common complaint I read is that many of these are just sentences, and while that still CAN be poetic, many of them probably weren't. Instead of getting into debate whether or not some of the Haiku's were acceptable, it probably would have been better to do a joke contest or something a bit more cut and dry.
I'll follow the crowd and post one of my entries:
Hear the beast growl/
My blade and bow call to me/
Let the hunt begin
Congrats once again to those who won. :]

Despite not getting picked, I actually really, really enjoyed that contest. I'm actually still vaguely messing around with haikus even after it & think I will be for quite a while =)
That said, in future, I do think a limit on the number of entries per person would be good. I don't know what the selection criteria were, but it felt like the way to do it was submitting 50 decent entries rather than 2 or 3 good ones. It might not have actually been like that, but that's how it
felt
from the outside looking in anyway.
And, for the record, there were one or two I did that I thought were soso, but the ones I liked were:
Arthas defeated / The cast down knights triumphant / Where now goes the Blade?
(Dual meanings: what happens to the ebon blade now that they're achieve what was really their only goal? And, in the LK fight, the players are killed but come back & Frostmourne is destroyed... but is it really the end of such a powerful weapon, or might it be reforged?)
Revealed in Yogg / Another Elder directs / our new Foes rebirth?
(Deathwing first appears in-game in WoW in yogg's mind... is another Old One behind his breakout in cataclysm?)
To keep on raiding / or break til Cataclysm? / Summer decisions.
(Think every guild's been through this one =\ )
It's white and looks / longer than average cloaks. / What color is it?
(
Stoneskin Gargoyle Cape
ftw ;)

I've got one final haiku for this contest, I'll go ahead and post it here, even though it's over.
Absurd game of chance/ Passing as a test of skill/ Boy, wasn't that fun?

I actually like your Haikus a lot more than i liked most of the others that were submitted and chosen for Beta keys. Saying that, I think WoWHead should have kept their opinions out of it all together; especially since they're not the ones actually getting the keys. This whole contest was completely biased towards submission that were liked by the staff; not submissions that were randomly chosen and then put up on the board for vote. If they had done that I would have liked this competition much more. Because of the fact that they did though, it soiled the purity of the competition for those there were participating. In a nutshell, this was pretty much a contest for submissions that were selected out opinion and prejudice instead of the logical and unbiased choice of random selection between all entries for each day. Thanks for being unfair WoWHead. If you agree vote this up; if you vote down you must really hate your competitions to be fair and unbiased.
You're saying you'd rather a load of crap that randomly gets pulled, stuff that is not 5/7/5 or 3/5/3
Stuff that might not even be WoW related
Stuff that has not been seen or even reviewed, meaning foul mouthing perhaps? Repeats of posts meaning that you could just sit there and copy paste your submission over and over to rig the RNG.
No, if there was no judging involved it would not have been what it was. Wowhead was the group giving away the keys, saying they should not have an opinion in the matter is...ridiculous at best.
You sir, are simply a sore loser. :\ I'm upset at all of the QQing on the board, especially the fact that most of it is the same thing we've been hearing. It's not unfair, you just feel like it is. Nobody can even tell you that the wowhead staff didn't go through all of the 20k+ submissions. They might have done just that, skimmed over the ones that didn't catch their attention, verify the ones that did, put those in a pile and judge later.
You should be grateful that they even had a contest, I would have been. I'm very happy they did the contest, because it's the only way I would have a chance at a Beta Key :3 But all of the complaining needs to stop.
TL;DR: Your QQing gets you nowhere, you guys must not understand what a haiku is if you're complaining about 17 syllable sentences, a lot of the haikus that didn't make it which are being posted here didn't fit the criteria (actually being 5/7/5 or 3/5/3 for starters) and people need to stop being such sore losers. Better luck next time...sheesh...

well, to say this lightly, the whole hiaku contests was major bull^&*! since almost none of the haikus wowhead posted for voting followed the 3/5/3 or 5/7/5 order that they had on the rules

The atypical "Son, I am disappoint." response. I was a bit late in turning in mine but I thought some of them were clever-- some of the ones I've read are just not clever at all, but that's just my tastes, I'm sure they're as deserving as I would have felt had I been chosen. That being said, it does seem a bit random in choices.
Might be hard going through thousands of entries.
As much as it might be hard they opened themselves up to that many entries, so going through that many should have been something thought about before allowing multiple submissions-- it still would have been a lot but not nearly as many-- also, it was likely divided up a bit-- I'm not trying to say someone who won wasn't deserving, they all were or they wouldn't have a key, just a bit disappointing, I suppose.
That being said (again), congratulations to all the winners, and enjoy your time in the Beta, I'm sure it'll be fun as hell-- go punch a dragon in the face.

First off: Stop being a sore Loser
Second off: Stop being incorrect, none of the haikus that made it to the contest disregarded the 3/5/3 or 5/7/5 rule. Not one.

Well tbh Honey there was one haiku pulled from voting in day 2's for not following the pattern. I also agree with you though - being a sore loser is lame. I didn't win, though unfortunate, glad to have even been able to participate. Malgayne had a ton of &*!@ to sort through :P
*Edit - Forgot to add the quote, lol
