Perhaps the better question would be "Why can't you just click "Pass" and let someone else have it?"
As an enchanter myself, I've often wondered why I can't click "Need" on everything since I "can" disenchant it. The answer is obvious though, because the remaining group members participated in getting the drop as well. Notwithstanding of course, the guys that always "Need" on everything which truly is annoying. Another thing we do is when a boss-reward is D/E'd and someone wins the roll, that person can no longer roll for shards the rest of the instance. It seems the last several runs has yielded a shard for everyone in the group.
Ifra is correct, everyone has a repair bill and the least you can do in an instance is work towards breaking even.
My miner/bs warrior always rolls before mining a deposit if another miner is present. If they don't have the level yet win the roll, I'll mine the ore and give it to them. They can sell it, save it or use it later. Our guild skinners will alternate who skins corpses and herbs are the same way as well.
Cloth though, is a dime a dozen in the outlands. I have so much netherweave that it's coming out of my booty hooty. Thankfully, I can get it turned into imbued netherweave which has some real value on our server.

You can keep all the shards. Just group with forgetful people and say "we'll roll for them all at the end so more people get a shard". You'd be amazed how many people forget to roll, even when you DE right in front of them while the mage makes a portal. Hell, I've had times where we rolled, I say "open a trade for a shard if you won", and the response was "good job all" and leaving the party. Hello 100g in mats!

Everyone has brought up excellent points on this subject. It's simply how things work in the game. Think of it this way - reputation and Badges of Justice aside, you kill bosses for their loot. Each member put forth effort in defeating said encounter and therefore should each have their fair chance of benefitting from the spoils. Even when loot is disenchanted, it still remains loot and the party still has their right in the share of it - if it were not disenchanted, it would be rolled on for vendor value. The ability of an enchanter to turn it into something more valuable is just a perk and an opportunity for group members to profit more from unneeded items.
Groups do not run instances for herbs (no, you stealth running Lichen-lovers don't count) nor do they run instances for leather, so while I do understand the profession mindset of it, it's not the same. Keep in mind that enchanters do not typically use their own materials in their craft (other than leveling with your own mats, which in the case of shards I would hope not) so it's not really a profession
requirement
. Unlike, say, herbs, boss loot items do not solely exist for the purpose of being disenchanted into tradeskill materials (although perhaps that's questionable with some terrible itemization...), they exist as rewards for defeating bosses.

Well, after reading a post on here it got me thinking: Why only roll for Enchanters trade items? I'm not ranting at all, or trying to make a fuss, but if we roll on a 15g shard that i need but you're just going to sell, why cant I just have it?
We dont roll for leather after it's been skinned.
We dont role for flowers after they've been picked.
We dont role for ore after it's been minned.
We dont role for Cloths after it's been dropped.
If we roll for Enchanters items, shouldnt we treat all profession items the same?
no LW = no skins
no herib = no flowers
no miner = no ore
no enchanter = we still get gold for vendoring the item
enchanting is treated differently because you are taking away ppl's vendor money, in exchange for a roll on the shard. if this is a problem, then just /greed like the rest of them. remember, though, more shards in circulation = lower cost.

Although, when I DE stuff, I make everyone roll greed and I roll need. We use the numbers from the greed rolls and the number from my need roll to see who gets the shard. Um, you haven't played in a while, I take it? When someone needs, only the need rolls show up. No one who hits greed even rolls when there's a need in the pack. I assume it was different way back when, but as far back as I can remember (not far :P), it has been this way.

Save all the shards till the end and do one roll after you kill the final boss. Top rolls get shards.

This is why i generally just greed on items(all greed when no one need it).
That way I usually end up with more shards.

I guess I usually try to encourage groups to roll at the end. I personally prefer the prospect of everyone getting at least one shard to one person getting 5 (sure, I could be that guy, but I surely could not be that guy as well). Generally nobody needs any of the blues in the heroic groups I'm in so more often than not every single drop is disenchanted. Most times, actually, that includes the epic at the end which gives us another one or two voids to roll on as well.

I just roll greed on everything I want to DE and after the instance is over I go to the bank and disenchant all the stuff that I won. I don't like to play the whole "let's roll for enchants" game, so I just don't mention the fact that I want to disenchant everything.
Does this make me greedy and selfish? Perhaps, but my professions are my business and if I win an item on a greed roll what I do with it is my business.
I realize the OP is talking about having the enchanter Need on an item to DE it, but the fact of the matter is he shouldn't feel obligated to do so. Consider the amount of money/time farming the enchanter invested to be able to disenchant high level items. Also, consider that more often than not you will be able to sell a shard on the AH for much more than you would be able to sell a blue item to a vendor. Does the enchant get any compensation for disenchanting items, thereby increasing your profit margin? No. By rolling on shards, the enchanter is essential giving the lucky winner extra money. I believe that it is this fact that is so irksome to the OP. But hey, like several others have also said - just don't roll for shards.
Also, it helps to disenchant everything after the instance is over - people get @#$%y when they see you aren't letting them roll on the disenchants.
