If the marketing department decides that level X is too scary for new players, the game can be adjusted to less levels.
You don't even need to cut any stats, you can simply display '40' instead of '80' or 50 instead of a '100' for player level.
In cata, they said players will get talent points every other level. So effectively they already cut the number of levels by 2. You do get raised stats every level, but they can call it 'mid-level powerup'.
I would rather play a game with less levels than 80. 80 is a big number, it's almost as big as a 100, and my kid used to say "100 can kill", when she was four (if you guys make a movie '100 can kill', please give my kid some royalty money for ice cream).

You also make the assumption that new players will look at those 85 levels the same as a veteran player who has a max level character. You also assume that all players hate leveling. Both assumptions are very incorrect.
Personally, when I started playing, I didn't have a firm grasp on how max level worked. It was so far away that I didn't concern myself with it, and didn't dread the time it would take to get there. I enjoyed myself immensely, and was actually disappointed that (since I never raided then) I didn't have a lot of ways to improve my character at that point.
Even now, I still enjoy leveling immensely, and the only reason I don't just constantly level alts is that lately, it's a choice between doing a sliver of work on my paladin (raiding, etc.) or leveling. I decided to put a damper on leveling at least til Cata so that my Paladin actually makes some progress.

I played Runescape before I came to WoW and I can say that WoWs leveling is
microscopic
compared to Runescape's. In RS there is like over 20 skills, each one takes even more time to get to 99 than just getting to WoWs level 80.
1-85 is daunting for new players? lulwut.

I am unsure that this is even an issue.
When I first started playing I was so overwhelmed and immersed in this new world that I was barely aware of, nor did I worry about, how long it would take me to reach 60.
It's a hard thing to remember when you were fresh to WoW but I don't think reaching endgame at lightning speed is a priority to new players.
This, when I started I was more intent on surviving Hogger than worrying about reaching level cap.
I did care about how long it'd take me to level 80. Every game I played, I rushed to challenging end-game content.

You guys are missing the point. If someone who has no friends who plays the game and has only heard about it decides to pick it up, 85 levels
is
daunting. It doesn't matter how long it takes to get those 85 levels, its the fact that they have to level up 85 times to catch up with the top content (not even realizing how long it takes to gear up AT level 85).
Sure, leveling will be faster in Cataclysm, but how are completely new players supposed to know that? When people who have never played it think of WoW, they think of people spending countless hours during the day to play the game. It makes sense that they would think that getting to level 80 or 85 would take a long time.
Plus, you have to remember, 7-8 complete days of playing time (/played time) is a LOT of time for a normal person. If you told someone that to get to the highest level took 168+ hours, they'd probably be surprised.
TL:DR - 85 levels sounds daunting. 168 hours IS daunting. You're kidding yourselves if you think that spending 168 hours or so to get to the max level in a video game is a rational assumption.

The number doesn't really matter, it can be 10000 or 4, the only thing that matters is how long it takes.
Besides that, I really enjoy leveling and I think it's one of the best aspects of the game. I was sad when I finally reached 60 on my first character, and I suddenly didn't know what to do.

Who cares if its f2p or p2p? People still drop tons of cash on those games in cash shops
Edit: Pwntiff is right also and its waaaaay freaking harder to level in EQ (not so much EQ2) than WoW and people still come back or sign up for those games on a daily basis.
and on another EQ related note: r.i.p my EQ paladin I got a email from sony telling me they are giving me a free month again but I dont have the heart to go back to a game they destroyed that I loved playing for 6yrs.
Amen to that. People think leveling is hard in WoW? Omfg, old school EQ was much harder.

When a new player is thinking of coming to WoW they will probably be interested in how many levels there are.. once they find out its 85 I doubt they will buy the game. 85 levels seems too much of a grind, even for people who play WoW. Even if they make leveling faster, the number alone is still daunting.
Do you think Blizzard will do some type of down-grade for alot of content, like to rework everything so it is scaled down in terms of levels? Moving vanilla raids down to level 40, BC raids to 50, WotLK raids to 60, and cataclysm to 65? To compensate this, zones, exp, items will all undergo a downgrade to fit the level, do you think this will ever happen? After cataclysm it will be 90 levels and I don't think anyone will buy the game, so Blizzard has to think about this some time.
Be glad it's not Maplestory or Runescape.
Enough. Friking. Said.

I think
you're
missing the point, which is: So what? You're speaking as if a brand new player should be able to pick up a game, hit max level, and be geared up within a few hours/days/whatever timeframe is comfy for you.
WoW isn't exactly hard by any means, but there's a lot of things to learn and lots of ways to play. Levelling up forces a player to become at least semi-familiar with their class abilities, whether it's how to nuke things hard, survive in a tight spot, carefully pick your battles, and/or everything in between. And that's just general gameplay, PvP's a whole different monster in terms of learning the game.
No truly immersive and great game should be maxed and mastered within a few days or even months. Otherwise it would get boring as hell and wouldn't be the monstrous figure that WoW is today.
Sure, leveling will be faster in Cataclysm, but how are completely new players supposed to know that? When people who have never played it think of WoW, they think of people spending countless hours during the day to play the game. It makes sense that they would think that getting to level 80 or 85 would take a long time.
They don't need to know that, and again, so what? If someone picks up the box, sees a level cap of 85 and decides that's too much, they'll put it back down and look for something simpler. No MMO is going to advertise "SMALL LEVEL CAP! LESS CONTENT!" as a selling point, because folks won't bother paying for it if it's 'over' within a few weeks. At least most will not, and most game companies know this.
Also, as someone else said, those kind of people will also find gearing up, learning proper rotation, utilizing proper strategy, and so on 'too daunting' to bother with. Let 'em go play Farmville or whatever, less lazy folks junking up my PUGs.
Plus, you have to remember, 7-8 complete days of playing time (/played time) is a LOT of time for a normal person. If you told someone that to get to the highest level took 168+ hours, they'd probably be surprised.
We're all normal people. We pay to play a game to keep us entertained; Blizzard has obliged us by providing a @#$%-ton of things to keep us entertained, and as is gaming/human nature, the endgame/expanding endgame is where it's at. If that doesn't sit right with you, then it's time for you to move on.
TL:DR - 85 levels sounds daunting. 168 hours IS daunting. You're kidding yourselves if you think that spending 168 hours or so to get to the max level in a video game is a rational assumption.
It sounds fun, and like tons of content and things to do with my MMO entertainment. No less rational than spending x hours throwing a ball around, or watching other people throw their balls around on TV, or any of the other worldwide mindless sports that involve men and their balls.

I don't see the problem with leveling up from 1 to 85 for a completely new player. If it's a new character made by an old player, that player will have heirlooms to speed it up. If it's a new character made by a new player, then you probably would want to spend a good amount of time to learn everything, from talents, spells and abilities to proffesions and how to function in a group. With the game growing more complicated, I think it's only fair that new players have to spend more time to learn the game propperly to avoid being a Lv. 85 with a low understanding of how the game works.
