Time it took me to get 1 - 70 in TBC about 7 days played
Time it took me to get 1 - 80 in wrath about 5 - 6 days played.
so its just a number it takes just as long to get there no matter what the level.

I imagine your experience and the fact that they sped up leveling aided this.
Who knows what the leveling pace will be for 1-85.

Pokemon is level 100.
And Star Ocean and most Enix/Squareenix titles max out at 255.

Superficially, people like to see more levels, because it appears to indicate more content.
I don't know people that want 20 levels (GW lol) so they could rush to 20 and "be done with it".

1-60 has taken me 5 days playtime, without a lot of playtime per day. That's using a Priest (arguably the longest, most boring class to level), along with a fresh account.
The game has been dumbed down to the point that leveling is simple and easy.
1-85 is not hard.

I started playing in vanilla. Leveling was slow and grindy IMO. Quest hubs past lvl 30 didnt really link very well. BC fixed that a little, and LK fixed it a lot. Now with azeroth being re-vamped, I can see leveling up to 60 being fun again. You can run dungeons, battlegrounds, quests and dailies all pre level cap. End game raiding is fun but not everyone does it.

In Ragnarok Online, to get 1% of experience from level 98 to 99, you had to grind humongous ammounts of mobs with a large party of supporters for about 1-2 hours. And that is only if you had some really efficient tactics, like mobtraining, wizard buffs, paladin damage sponges and AoE kill-fields.
Oh and every time you died, you lost 1% exp.

Some people like to play games to level up.
There's games with level caps as high as 200, or even more.
There's games without level cap, where all you do is level up.

Many popular console-based RPGs have level caps of at least 100, yet those games (Final Fantasy and the like) still sell like hot cakes.
I think that you're making a mountain out of a molehill, personally.
