His hobbits seemed to be rather the first of their kind. And half-lings and Kender are cooler, even if they came later.

considering a game which literally owes its creation to the trilogy, there seems to be very few obvious onesBecause it doesn't; D&D has more in common with WoW then LotR.
Maybe you didn't notice the giant EYEBALL in Pit.

Opinions notwithstanding, the fact remains that Tolkien was a major driving force behind what we now know as "High fantasy." It was one of, if not the, first of its kind. Many people tend to forget that Tolkien started writing the Lord of the Rings before the Hobbit was even published, in
1937
. I'm not saying you HAVE to like it because it's old, and that it's exempt from current standards of writing, but it's also unfair to criticize it and make blanket statements based on modern standards all the same.
It's no different than saying "Super Mario Bros. is a piece of garbage compared to Super Mario Galaxy 2." (Plenty of people do this. I'm not saying you guys in particular are, but I felt it an apt analogy.)
Yes, I enjoyed Lord of the Rings. Yes, it's a slow and sometimes difficult read. Tolkien has a very strong habit of going off on tangents explaining seemingly inane things, but you have to remember that, again, this was the first of its kind. You have to pretend you've never heard of these elves/orcs/etc. before, and that's why he's explaining what they are all the time. He explains surroundings because back then, maybe people didn't have the same basis of imagination that many do now. You're constantly exposed to fantasy settings, so it's very easy to imagine a new fantasy setting with minimal description. If you've never seen or read any depiction of what a living forest should look or feel like, how would you know, unless it was explained.
Anyway, looping this around, I get it, people don't rank LOTR in their top books. That's completely fine. That doesn't change the fact that LOTR set the pace for high fantasy in today's fiction. Yeah, there are tons of book I own that I preferred reading over LOTR. However, that isn't to say that LOTR wasn't a good book, in my opinion, and it was still revolutionary for its time.

So back to the topic at hand, well sort of. Since this isn't an items as much as the Human /silly
"So, I have this idea for a great movie. It's about two gnomes who find a bracelet of power, and they have to take it to the Burning Steppes and cast it into the Cauldron. They form the Brotherhood of the Bracelet. Along the way they're trailed by a murloc named Gottom, who's obsessed with the bracelet, and nine bracelet bogeymen. It could be a three-parter, called 'Ruler of the Bracelet'. The first part would be called 'The Brotherhood of the Bracelet', followed by 'A Couple of Towers', with the climactic ending called 'Hey, the King's Back!'" (A reference to the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Erroneously, The Cauldron is in Searing

To be honest, most of what everyone is saying is the same few things over and over....LotR has some to do with WoW, but it's not entirely inspired by it. If LotR never came out do you think that there would never be a MMORPG for medieval times ever? I think there would.

I think you have your story mixed up as LotR was supposed to be a sequel of "The Hobbit" in a 2 volume set. The Economy at the time was not in the condition to do so, so Tolkien released Volume 1, excluding Volume 2 which was called "The Silmarillion". LotR was released as 3 books to make it easier for people to buy a book one at a time instead of the entire story all at once.

The last thing, is that the storyline of WoW and LotR are WAY different in many forms. I don't know where people get the idea of it being inspired by LotR....maybe because it is in Medieval times? Or they get some names from the books? I don't know, but I do know Blizzard wasn't thinking of LotR when making Warcraft: Orcs and Humans.
