iirc, Tolkien designed the orcs. For that, my lock is grateful :D
But yeah, tried reading the Silmarillion myself, and I just couldn't manage, it was too boring. This was after having read The Hobbit, which was designed as a children's book, and hence easier to read. I enjoyed that one.

Thats why LoTR is one of the best selling books in the world. Its why its loved by Millions. Its why its considered the main source that spawned the modern Fantasy genre.
You must think Twilight is an awesome book too, right? When something appeals to the masses, it does not mean that it must satisfy everyone. Especially people who are well-read in the genre.
And oh god, i wish it did not. I can not say how many fantasy worlds i have seen where elves and dwarves hated each other without no real reason (because Tolkien did it, and because thats what dwarves and elves do, right?).

Silmarillion was a gigantic bunch of scripts and notes put together by Tolkien's son. It's not a book per se.
I'll agree that the first book is a bit void, and that Tolkien had an addiction on describing surroundings, but as the book goes on, it only gets better and better.

He designed the orcs, sure, but the typical fantasy orcs that are evil and such. WoW orcs buck that trend, not to mention they look COMPLETELY different than Tolkien orcs.
Also, the Dark Riders that went looking for the Scythe of Elune ARE a reference to the Nazgul of LoTR. Sure, there's speculation that they might be the first generation of death knights and such, but that doesn't automatically mean that they aren't influenced by another fantasy source or aren't an easter egg. There's too many similarities to say that it's just a coincidence.
It's like saying that the dwarves aren't based on Tolkien dwarves at all, and that they have so much lore behind them. Makes no sense (plus with the Dark Riders, there's VERY little lore about them).

The Scythe of Elune tale does sound like it was based on LoTR.Only the part with Jitters and the Riders; seeing as it starts with a Night Elf woman, trying her best to fight back against demons, and over the course of her battles, she ends up summoning the worgen, who steadily go insane... and then the Scythe starts summoning it's own worgen. Also, unlike the actual Wraiths, who are hunting for the Ring constantly.... the Black Riders only go after the Scythe when the Worgen problem begins to expand across Duskwood and they are called to it by the magic.
As for why I dislike Tolkien and Lord of the Rings... I found it boring, I really did. I have an omnibus collection of the three books, and it took me almost a year to read because I could not get into it. Yes, he came up with the evil overlord trope, the elves are arrogant and the dwarves are pretend-irish.... but meh. The only character in the series I liked was Gollum.... but about half-way through, they ruined him and turned him 'good', till the end when he destroys the Ring. The 'epic' battles weren't in my opinion. Even the so-called ultimate evil Ring Wraiths were 'weak'; 9 in the beginning, talking about how they are relentless and nothing can stop them.... and they get destroyed by a flood, well except for the one who shows up later to have a one on one duel of course. /shrug, Not everyone likes everything of course.
And before someone leaps on the 'read all three in a year', I have an omnibus collection of the first three Dragonlance books, only 200 pages smaller, and my frist read through of that was only a week, with my shortest being 2 days.

Obviously Peter Jackson designed Sauron with Arthas in mind.

Lich King = Sauron
With the obvious difference that Sauron never raised people from the death.
And I'm pretty sure that the LK's model is based on how he looked in WCIII, which came out before Peter Jackson's trilogy.
Ok, now that's just silly. LoTR, which involved many descriptions of Saurons appearance, Is over 100 years old.
Yeah but Jackson turned Sauron into some kind of mecha Vader armour thing...... also, for a fun fact: I hate Peter Jackson movies! So the LotR movies just suck that much more to me... alright, bashing is over(but I will defend my views if they are called on).

BlamelessJak, most of the "trolling and angry corrections" are talking about this one phrase:
considering a game which literally owes its creation to the trilogy
You can argue that every work of fiction is inspired by a previous work of fiction: In fact,
Audre Lorde
already did
, and I'm fairly certain that idea wasn't wholly hers either.
Yes, nearly every work of fiction is derivative, to some extent, of another, but they all differ in some way. Tolkien created most of the current fantasy archetypes, but that can't be avoided when there exists a work that virtually founds a genre. Tolkien's works, however, are largely based on various European mythologies. Again, there are no new ideas.
Also, the Lord of the Rings is not yet sixty years old.

Im just saying, without LoTR, it is highly unlikely wow would exist. And people disagree on that; especially because, in all honesty, all of the races have very little to do with the LotR versions. Arrogant Elves exist everywhere, but put the Night Elves into Middle Earth, and the Blondes there would be shown a thing or two. And of course... the orcs(which in LotR are not 'orcs' anyways, there mutants of one of the other races), at least WoW's orcs are their own race.

I would suppose LotR has had a huge influence, acknowledged or not, on all subsequent fantasy fiction, be it literature, film or game.
Which I pointed out here:
Tolkien created most of the current fantasy archetypes, but that can't be avoided when there exists a work that virtually founds a genre.
My argument was not WoW was not influenced at all by Tolkien's works, but that Tolkien's works were not the single influencing force behind Warcraft lore. Just like in the discussion a couple weeks ago about HP Lovecraft's Elder Gods and WoW's Old Gods, there is a certain amount of influence, but to say that it is the sole influence or "Without X, Y wouldn't exist" is not entirely correct.
If WoW was based primarily on LotR, it would be LotRO. If WoW was based primarily on Lovecraftian mythos, all our characters would be insane drug addicts who commit suicide after a dungeon.

Not really.
His elves and dwarves = Nordic Elves and Nordic dwarves.
His orcs were based on the Old English word
Orc
meaning "demon".
His hobbits seemed to be rather the first of their kind.
