Have nothing to do with the Wraiths... those are possibly the remaining G1 Death Knights camped out at Karazhan, and supposedly lead by the Huntsman Attumen.
Just because they have to do with real lore doesnt mean their inspired by LOTR. Especially when pretty much EVERY aspect is described in a similar LOTR way:
"They seem to be almost identical to the Nazgûl from the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy of books. Both are dark minions referred to as "Black Riders" or "Dark Riders", speak harshly and shrilly, have the power to communicate with an immaterial being designated "the Lord" (the Warcraft Black Riders' usage of a "bauble" to communicate with their master is also likely a reference to the Palantír stones used in Lord of the Rings), and seek a specific ancient cursed "tool" of great power (Scythe of Elune and One Ring respectively) with which they have an intristic bond and had been previously discovered in a cave by a supposedly insignificant male character who knew nothing of the artifact's true properties (Jitters, Bilbo Baggins)."

No where in the quest did Jitters or his diary say they had shrill voices... seeing as Death Knights, they would speak with that hollow sounding voice all the undead creatures have. I don't know, I hate LotR so I enjoy over looking any references to it but using the actual Warcraft lore in place of a weak reference.
then why post in a topic that is about lotr? just looking for another number to your posts adamsm?
on topic: i was gonna say the eye tower thing to and lets not forget the human male joke /silly

Why not? Free forum; and while I dislike the movies/books, I'm not saying anything negative about the people who do. I merely corrected on thing farther up, that LotR was responsible for WoW, which wasn't true, as there is more D&D influences. And I said that the Black Riders didn't have as much in common with the Ring Wraiths because I don't really see that either.

"The Scythe of Elune." one of the Riders shrieked in a voice both harsh and shrill, like the grinding of an axe on stone. And the last word - Elune - it croaked, as if choking on the sound.

Jitters' Completed Journal
The references to the Dark Riders in that Diary are pretty much unmistakably references to the Dark Riders (Nazgul/Ring Wraiths) of LoTR.
The story in the Diary itself is a reference to the story of the Ring from LoTR in many places.
Which is actually a reference to the movie... I don't remember anywhere in the books that it said the Wraiths shrieked like banshees. But meh, I'd rather not think of the Dark Riders as having anything to do with the Wraiths, seeing as I like the G1 Death Knights more.

Wow... didn't think my little post would elicit this much discussion.
The only reason I made the correlation between the Dark Riders and Ring Wraiths is because of an old discussion on the official forums where the same topic was brought up, and a lot of similarities were brought up (much like have been brought up here).

The Wraiths are also referred to as Dark Riders in multiple locations throughout the trilogy.Yes, because only in LotR has there ever been a group of 'Dark Riders'.....

Follow the trail back further. D&D was pretty much spawned from Tolkien works. Tolkien is the founder of fantasy as we know it today. D&D, WoW, GW, Warhammer, MTG, etc. They all trace back to Tolkien, either through each other or directly.

I'm not saying that, but you are denying the link between the dark riders of Jitter's Diary and those of LoTR. So let's break down the similarities.
Both are referred to as Dark Riders.
Both are chasing after a person with an object of great power that is assuming control over the person that holds it (and both objects were found in a cave/dungeon and were lost prior to being found and then escaping with it)
Both have high pitched voices/screams.
Both use a device (crystal/orb) to communicate with a master.
Both have a master, 1 person that commands them to do his bidding.
I have never played Alliance so I can only draw those similarities from reading the Diary and don't know if there are more in the quest line it references.
I'm denying it because I hate Lord of the Rings... or did you not read at all? I don't care if there is a link there; I don't notice, I don't enjoy reference being called to it and all the rest. Again, I'd rather not think about something I hate, being referenced in something I like alright? But again.... lots of Black/Dark Riders exists, lots of said riders chasing after things... yada yada.

/shrug; and Tolkien pulled information from pretty much every fairy tale and old legend for his stuff.

First off, I'm curious as to why you hate LotR? It is a wonderful story and amazing books.
Second, yes Tolkien did exactly that. He collected various legends, myths, fairy tales, whatever you want to call them and turned them into something more. Into a new genre that was not previously established as common as it is today, or then. He took those stories and turned them into the genre of fantasy.

I give you the light of Eärendil, our most beloved star. May it be a light for you in dark places, when all other lights go out.
Oh wait... That's not what she said, i think it was:
"Take this, the
Light of Elune
, drink of it when all seems lost and death is near. It may save you, Goddess willing."

As every writer he was influenced by what had come before. Tolkien did pull inspiration from many sources. However, he put a world together which was unique in many ways. He created a whole alternative world whith mythical races in place of foreign people with their own look and culture. This world inspired D&D etc.
I'd say Tolkien pulled it 'all' together to create a world and this world then inspired fantasy as we know it today.

Just because you dont like LoTR, Adamsm, you cannot deny that. Thats just childish
I don't hate Lotr, yet, when speaking of influences of Wow, I skip straight to Norse/Greek/Native American/Middle Eastern mythologies instead, because that's where they originally came from.

Not really... Tolkien was a scrub. The characters in LotR are stiffer than Shakespears. The first half of the first book was pretty much a sleepfest and i had to force myself to read it. And he just sucked big time at typing women. If you would dabble deeper into the fantasy genre, especially off the mainstream into the depths of underground, you would also see that there are MUCH better things than Lord of the Rings.
