I live in New Zealand, and between quarter and half of our beef exports (~8000 tonne per week) are sent to the USA for grinding into meat patties. I kid you not.
Apparently it is not good beef either...

Usually the stuff that is sent overseas is much better than the stuff you buy in shops for like twice the price (in NZ at least).
Also, I like fish though not as much anymore. I like calamari and prawns a lot, they taste nice, and seafood sauce is good. One type of fish I still really like is smoked salmon.

There's another factor that hasn't been taken into account.
1) There are more poor people in the world then middle class and rich people.
2) Fish are cheap (I'm talking in general terms as far as the world goes). Why are fish cheap? Because people in India (and other countries that have a majority of very poor people) don't have to own land, barns, buy/grow feed or anything to catch a fish. A small boat and a net and skill is all you need when you go out onto a river to fish.
Cows, chickens, pigs take a lot land and resources to raise. Fish are expensive for us BECAUSE we eat certain types of fish and would never go out to the lake/pond/river/sea coast and eat only what is available. Also, the price of fish goes up because to get a fish that was fished up in Alaska to Iowa is expensive. Most of the world peoples (ie poor counties) don't do this. They eat what is available.
In Japan, where land is scarce and fishing coast and rivers are everywhere, then fish are cheaper then a cow/chicken/pig.
That's all I'm saying. Fish are cheaper, in general world terms, then other types of meat.

Fish disches are generally harder to prepar at home.
Yes, because it's so hard to cook trout, bass, pickerel, and all the other lake/river fish. The only things you have to watch for are dishes like puffer/blow fish, or any actual poisonous ones.

Unless they're already skinned, gutted, and filleted, yes they still are harder. Also since there are different kinds, they have to be prepared slightly differently, like, some seasonings won't work with this fish, but is perfect for that fish, and it's mostly seasonal. Plus I know of tons of ways to season and prepare chicken, quite a few ways for different cuts of beef, but fish and pork pretty much perplex me. I never had baked fish until very recently, but it's definitely going in my repertoire.

Are you saying it is harder season a fish then a steak? That makes no sense. Fish typically are gutted, skinned and beheaded. Like a cow. In most major countries, we don't do 90% of the preparing of our food. Most of that is done by paid laborers.
Yes, you can buy fish that are unprepared and do it yourself. It's fairly common. Were as, you're not as likely to buy a cow/chicken/pig and slaughter it yourself. You can, but that's extremely rare. And why? Because it is harder to prepare a cow to eat then it is a fish.

Then once it's clean, fry it up, with or without batter, and your good.

This mainly. You buy pre-prepared beef steaks, why not buy pre-prepared fish steaks?
I don't think I've ever gone out and actually bought a whole fish and prepped it, unless I was cooking it whole (which there are a lot of great recipes for).
Having said that, I'm off to the local fish markets to pick up some raw salmon and tuna sashimi, fresh oysters for my girlfriend's 21st tonight, and pick up some fresh breakfast while I'm there. Catch you guys later :)

Lol, there's the difference. I live in a rural area with only two grocery stores that sell fish: Wal-Mart and the local market that's more expensive. In either case I'd be dealing with fish that's more expensive when prepared, and if I got it from Wal-Mart, it would probably be twice frozen and farm raised. Whereas with other meats, which I get from the local market and deals with local meat businesses, they are prepared already, and easier to sell (yes, you can buy a cheap and prepared cow around, but storage is an issue). And my grandma could deal with fresh fish, but I can't. *bleh* We eat steak once a week, and fish that is all filleted and stuff is just a bit less expensive than that and not as filling, where I can get two meals of chicken for the price of on meal of fish, and the chicken would have leftovers. And as I said, I know a ton of ways to cook chicken, but...two or three ways for fish, and depending on the type or texture of the fish, I'd need to season it differently.

It's because they don't appreciate the godly food that is fish and chips.
Trust me, I appreciate that wonderful dish.

I hate non-fish seafood, but I like fish just fine. I eat more meat simply because it is cheaper and easier to prepare.

Most of our best meat (steaks etc) is exported to Europe and USA. We get mediocre quality for local consumption and all the off-cuts and old meat is sent to USA for grinding into meat patties.
