Okay, so I usually get decent groups in LFGs.
But a couple times I have gotten some real pricks. One was a level 40 or so Pally in ZF. He was completely Heirloomed out. He had rightous Fury on and pulled aggro just to complain about me tanking. After a wipe where he tried to blame me and my newbie friend's DPS. He picked on both our specs and told us to get some heirlooms before re-quing.
My response was my usual to people like this; "Heirlooms are for pansies." (Note: This is just a line. I don't like heirlooms and say this when asked about them. Grats if you have full 'looms and aren't a #$%^&*.)
He began flipping out and calling me retarded because I enjoyed leveling.
"Why make an alt if you don't like to level?"
"Shut up and get an 80, retard"
He then leaves the group. The healer and one DPS finally speak and say "I'm with him. Get some hierlooms, leveling sucks." and leave group
Is this really how everyone is? I love leveling and trying new classes. But am I truely the minority?

I'm with you. Not that heirlooms are for pansies, mind you, but they are not essential for leveling, or doing well in dungeons. I've been in dungeon groups where I was the top DPS over those with heirloom gear, FWIW. *shrug*

I've been told I need Heirloom gears...
I just respond with, "Dude, this is my first character."
Which just happens to be the truth...

I make it a point now to never buy or use heirloom gear this time playing the game. I don't miss it, I don't need it, and I don't want it, and no twinking alts either. Oh, and no "run throughs" in dungeons from higher level friends, either.
Every new character I start is like a totally fresh one with 2 exceptions: I give them 5 gold and 4 netherweave bags. There's nothing like actually needing drops in dungeons, and watching your gold to make sure you can afford the milestones. (Mounts, etc.)
Never enjoyed the game as much as I am now.

I do it cause leveling is long, and well, the quests are alright but I look more on mechanics than quest lines, since I've already leveled before. But the items aren't great, they just ease the amount needed to level, which is all I'm going for.
People like this are the regular 'special' type that'll continue to think they know what they're doing cause they have a 80 character already, when they don't know at all.

Try running that same dungeon with a full Heirloom group.
Do it again with no Heirloom.
Realize why Heirloom is useful and how the guy is partly correct.
Stop complaining.

There you go! *High Fives*
Want even more fun? Turn off you're addons! (I did ICC with them off. We did it but the raid was pissed at me even though I never died short of wipes.)

We all know heirlooms are great, but not everyone has an 80, and therefore not everyone has access to heirlooms. The LFG is for every player, not just those with heirlooms. The ones who need to stop complaining are the ones picking on the players who are simply trying to level their toons with the gear they have access to.

True story: I don't like using the extra exp heirlooms. I use the trinkets and the staff on my priest because, well, I didn't need any more gems and I ran out of things to do with my emblems. Though I do remember this one time in BC when I made my first character and didn't use any heirlooms. Somehow it still reached max level. It was the damnedest thing.

I never said Heirloom was
required
, I was merely stating that it
does
make a huge difference when leveling, and it
does
make dungeons easier/faster.
Basically, everything Sententia said.

The original conflict you described actually had very little or nothing to do with heirlooms. They just became a convenient way to beat someone over the head.
To your question: I give my alts heirlooms if it's at all practical. But I do have some alts off my main server, and there's definitely a certain charm to playing the game like that.

I agree that "leveling sucks" but not everyone HAS heirlooms. If it really is your first character, or you're rolling on a new server, you CAN'T use heirlooms (well, you can on another server but it would cost you $25)

I tend to buy the Chest heirloom and
maybe
the shoulder one too. I never buy the weapon heirloom as i love farming for new weapons and such. When cata comes im deleting everything and everyone (heirlooms included).

I love how so many people will insist on playing in gear that overpowers the content (either demanding high gs requirements for heroics or twinking out their leveling characters) to remove as much time and effort from playing as possible and then turn around and mock hunters, paladins, death knights, etc as facerolling classes.
