Wow is seriously easy mode vs the other MMO's out there. I'm not saying it's anywhere close to perfect, but it's got a hell of a lot more information available in game than many of the other games out there. I remember having to research online outside the game to figure out how to craft items in game. There was no GUI that told you that you need this material or that material and if you combined them then you craft something cool. Everything was via spreadsheets or website info OUTSIDE the game. The game was Anarchy Online.
Wow has so much in game via helpful tooltips, text explaining what to do, etc. It literally does take a FRACTION of the time to get any kind of end game understanding of what you need to know for end game. To not do any research, especially with many dedicated sites that basically TELL you what to do, is just being lazy.
Not to pick on anyone but the following was said:
For instance, my ex gf has a retpally (actually two, I believe) but doesn't raid. She spent a boatload of gold on the 264 crafted DPS boots and legs because they were upgrades from her T9; she didn't know that for retpallys these items are bad due to ArP and that going with T10 pieces would be better for her - at this point it's too late for her to go back and do it if she wants to raid, so she has no choice but to sit out of the end of WOTLK having never seen the inside of ICC, or really any raid for that matter (I think she did Onyxia once with her casual scrub guild).
How did she know about the 264 crafted boots to begin with? I'm sure she looked up the materials for those boots. If she's capable of doing that or going that far, how can she miss the part where it explains that ArPen isn't ideal for Paladins?
My point is that the amount of information about WoW is so easily accessible that everyone and anyone should spend the 5 mins to do a general search. Take 15 mins to become a somewhat expert at the class you are playing. Asking for in game guides on how to gem and talent is against the "player makes the decisions" aspect of this game. Take advantage of all the hard work and number crunching that others in EJ and elsewhere have put into this game. For Pete's sake there are videos on how to do each boss available.

especially with the amount of whispers I get about dual-wielding shaman weapons
Wha....
If people actually question that...I might have to faceplant.

These days Paladins can help in ICC even in ArPen gear. A bit sad someone gets locked out for this.
On the other hand, I just had 2 wipes in heroic CoT because the paladin in T10 could not hold aggro.

I'll just give the benefit of the doubt (if nothing else but for my sanity) and assume he's questioning what speeds to wield, as opposed to whether or not to DW in the first place...These days Paladins can help in ICC even in ArPen gear. A bit sad someone gets locked out for this.
Yeah, certain slots are tough to get non-ArPen for. Boots, for example. The only (competitive) non-ArPen boots pre-ICC are Anub'arak and 25-man Algalon.

Atlas Loot shows the materials needed, there's nothing in the game that says ArP isn't good for Pallys - all she did was look at the gear, deduce that it was better than her T9/245 (which it is) and figured it would be worth getting. She didn't look up the threads on EJ that say how T10 is the best for Retpallys because nobody told her she should, but you can easily find out mats for crafted items in-game.. see my point? The game doesn't tell you that ArP is bad for Retpallys, but the game provides and tells you that there are items that are upgrades to what you're currently using based on their attributes and, yes, Gear Score since that fad has taken over many servers.

scottmj, your post was great. I am a 27 year old female and I've just recently gotten into the game. I had a bad experience in Wailing Caverns with a PUG group because the other 4 people were "veterans" and they basically spat on me and kicked me out without giving me any helpful advice. I appreciate your stance on being helpful and when I get to level 80 I hope I can do raids with people as courteous and considerate as you and you seem to be. :D

I've said it before, and I'll say it again: This attitude is largely thanks to the anonymity of the Dungeon Finder. There's no repercussions for people to be jerks and unhelpful, because 99% of the time you'll be grouped with people who aren't on your server and whom you'll never see again. There's no sense of community and "Let's help the newbies so we have a larger pool of folks to group with later on" it's just selfishness.
In the past these people would earn a reputation for being rude and unhelpful and others wouldn't group with them; if they were really vile specimens (ninjas, griefers, etc.) they would end up blacklisted by the entire server or even find themselves guildless and unable to get into a guild due to their rep. But now, if someone ninjas an item or is rude and insulting to another player, nobody cares.

Just tell everyone this as often as possible and your chances of people being considerate go up by 85%!
And your chances to get loot go up too!

I am at level 46 now and I have yet to see anyone in my random dungeon groups suggest I do anything differently. I know this can't be because I don't need the advice, either. I welcome helpful info. The problem is like you said in the end, most people just kick you and go about their business because it's simpler.
P.S. No one ever asks in my dungeon groups and I don't volunteer that's a 27 year old woman. :P

I hate people like that in general. Whenever I make judgment calls, I check their gear and specs first, and if it looks like they really absolutely have no idea what they are doing, I try to help...Besides that I just keep silent unless something really bad happens, then I criticize.

I think the game needs a couple of dungeon role specific quests, perhaps something that could involve npc's or even just plain training dummies?
Tanks: Must hit and keep agro on 2 or 3 targets while npc's dps and heal
Healers: Keep tank npc up while observing triage (healing most close to death)
Dps: Focus on npc tanks and not go to over 60% agro (as an example)
Either make it so you can't enter the lfd tool until these are done OR stick an achievement and a vanity pet reward on it ;)

Lets just say i got yelled at by an arcane mage, during 3.3 for asking him politely why he gemmed like a holy paladin.

This is the one thing I really hope they fix in Cata (or just with the new patch) and it sounds like they are. You get most of what you need to fulfill a role when you choose that tree, instead of having this crap where you have to wait until 30+ until you can actually tank or heal like a real tank/healer (as opposed to just tossing out what you can or going Ret with RF).
I tried to level a Balance druid, and got bored at low levels because I had to go Feral Kitty to do anything meaningful, since I can't behave like a Balance druid until I get Moonkin form which is what, level 40ish? That's a design flaw, and it sounds like they're fixing it.

That's why I only give them one offer of help.
