You should stop visiting gold seller websites :P
Seriously - just get an authenticator. $6 if you don't have an iphone. If you need to cry about $6, then I'm not sure how you are paying the monthly fee to play.
you dont even need an iphone, you can use it on a variety of mobile devices

The "fun" part is: a lot of it isn't even hacking, but phishing and/or scams.
s/a lot of it/virtually all of it/

I've posted this on other thread so I will just paste it here.
I've always stressed that Blizz should incorporate an e-mail link to access your account if you chose to activate this sort of redundant protection.
The same way, when you need to retrieve a password that a website sends an email link that you have to click before accessing your account.
I would think it even possible to make your IP address a part of your protection without serious expenditures. Account access only allowed from that address.
If anyone has ever had their car stolen probably knows that after you file your report no serious attempt is ever made by the police dept to find it. As long as the insurance company replaces your loss ..your happy after some inconvenience.
I get the feeling Blizz treats stolen accounts pretty much the same way.

Why are so many people under the impression that account security is Blizzard's responsibility? It's
your
account,
your
computer,
your
password,
your
email,
your
failure to realize that ihaxurwow.com isn't a Blizzard site,
your
choice to go to shady websites, and
your
laziness in keeping
your
patches up to date.
Blizzard doesn't control
any
of that. Stop failing at using a computer.

Just going to say, all the people in this thread assuming that damn-near everyone who gets hacked is only in that situation because they either gave out information or didn't do enough to protect their account: You may be singing a different tune when your account is compromised.
I haven't played WoW in 6 months, and I'm still getting phishing e-mails. My account was already hacked into 4 months ago, but I canceled my credit card when I canceled the account, so I don't care. I don't plan to return to WoW, so I really don't care.

What I am saying is that if an account gets hacked and gold is passed on then they should be able to trace said hack and disable the account to where the gold has gone.
You seriously don't think that they do this? I know for a fact that accounts get banned for being in league with other accounts for this type of thing.
The problem is these hackers have a ton of accounts so they use other stolen accounts to send the gold to then sell it ASAP.
So you can't really ban the other player. They also investigate large portions of gold being traded for nothing convinced that it may be a gold selling service. If you give 20k to someone and get nothing in return or something of ridiculously low value they investigate that mark my words.

I'm not exactly sure what you mean here. Do you mean account thieves can pull my account information out of thin air? Oh great. EVERYONE CANCEL YOUR ONLINE BANKING ACCOUNTS FOR YOUR OWN GOOD!
Seriously, everyone whose account gets compromised:
...is only in that situation because they either gave out information or didn't do enough to protect their account...

No, I won't, because I'm not going to do stupid things with my computer or my account information. I haven't been playing since vanilla, but I have been playing since BC, and I have yet to get compromised. But then again, I don't fail at using a computer.

Yet you still care enough to post on WoW related forum...hmmmm.
Are you suuuureeee you "really don't care"
Yes if an account is compromised..it's because we opened a door whether knowingly or unwittingly to account hackers. Otherwise they wouldn't be phishing.
Sort of like a burglar showing up at your front door wearing a UPS uniform claiming a delivery. They can only rob you if you let them in and they will keep knocking until someone does.

Blizzard should add server wide broadcasts to help after an account has been recovered. Other people use to have lots of good advice:
Server Message: The account of Dkswedkdin has been hacked recently.
Server Message: Please help Dkswedkdin with some advice.
Dkswedkdin has come online.

They offer tons of advice, people just don't look at their advice, or follow it.

My question is gow has Blizzard got all the fan-boys brain washed into thinking it is the end users jobs to secure the account?
There's no brain-washing involved. Security starts with the end user. Period. Do not pass go, unless you'd like to drive off the fail cliff.
Major corporations spend literally
millions
of dollars a year educating their employees because they understand that, regardless of the security inherent to their infrastructure, the front line of keeping information secure is with the people using the software. A network can have every possible security suite, perfectly configured and monitored - and still wind up with Vundo spreading across every machine, because an end user wasn't careful enough.
To use a real life metaphor: I rent a house; however, I understand that the stuff
inside
the house won't be covered by the actual owner's insurance policy. Thus, I keep my windows and doors locked, and have rental insurance to protect myself.
