I use the addon
Elitist Group
.
It allows you to see, at a glance, how well gemmed, enchanted, specced, and geared a particular player is. It also allows you to easily see their experience level through achievements.

It's easily as good or better than the old method, and it blows the utterly ignorant gearscore out of the water. I highly encourage you to give it a shot.

Wow, that Elitist Group addon looks amazing. Much better than this GS trash that's polluted servers with ridiculousness.

Ask which person on tankspot voiced the encounter in 5 seconds (so they cant alt-tab, go to youtube, search, pull it up, and watch)
Because you can't know an encounter without having watched the tankspot video?
Right.
Best way is networking, and then do the legwork yourself: Ehen setting up a 25 man, have some assistants that you can trust and delegate checking to them as well.

Aestu, how is elitist group for "bads"? Your not even trying to make sense, it lets you do anything that inspecting will let you do, if not more. Sure, it would help if you had them go with you to the training dummies and checked their DPS, but there is only so much you can do when starting a pug. Elitist Group is better on a point where just some numbers won't tell you enough. There just isn't a way that it is any worse than inspecting someone and personally rating their choice on gear. With what you said, you are trying to compare apples to oranges even though they are two different things.
The only way I can understand what you are saying is if you are just looking at the three small rows of information in the inspection frame from elitist group, but that is not what the addon is all about.

Gearscore and Elitist Group are popular because they let everyone be a false elitist no matter how little skill they have.
You still haven't responded to why using Elitist Group is any different then /inspect. It's actually better, because you might not know the exact gemming a Discipline Priest should have - but Elitist Group does.
You do bring up a good point about observing how they type. Yeah, some people are lazy and might not use full punctuation, but when they talk like, "inv me 2 ur grp plz. 5400 gs n amazin deeps", you can usually ignore them.

The thing you're missing is that gear level means nilch since getting gear is trivial in this expansion, and bad players will remain bad regardless of skill - and it is possible to get a pretty good indication of whether or not a player is likely to be bad based on other factors that can be seen through an inspect.
You can still spot most of the complete idiots by an inspect; they are the ones with completely inaproriate meta-gems, gems in general and enchants. I've even seen a tank with inactive meta, because "it cost too much stamina to socket a red to activate it".
