The entire game is meaningless. Achievements are just another one of those meaningless things you can pursue for fun. Just like the gear you're wearing, the pets you have, the mounts you have, and all the other meaningless crap in this video game.

What else is there to do when you aren't raiding? Farm gold? Yeah that's not boring. Level an alt? How many 80's does one person really need? Why not do some achievements and kill time? As for being meaningless, if you're looking for something more meaningful, go volunteer your time for Habitat for Humanity, or start a fund raiser to raise money for abused and abandoned animals. Walk along a road and pick up trash. There are far more meaningful things to do, than playing a video game. If you choose to play the game instead, that's cool, most of us do, but don't complain because it's features aren't "rewarding". This was the path you chose.

Downing hardmode 25-man Lich King only to find out that your hard-earned loots are going to be replaced with quest greens in Hyjal? Now
that's
meaningless. Achievements, earning nice gear, downing bosses, etc. are just there for bragging rights.

They're as meaningless as imaginary magic swords you get from defeating AI-controlled dragons.

Gearscore itself is the problem, not the achievements; most people I see looking for people always put that idiotic number up before they ask for achievement, and even some pugs don't take the achievement as anything; I recently tried to join an ICC pug, was a Monday and hadn't run it with my guild as I was busy on the official raiding nights(we don't care about GS by the way, we just enjoy our raids); I linked the achievement for the first wing killed on both 10/25 man, but because I don't use the addon, I couldn't answer the question of 'What's your gear score?', and I lost out on the run.

Heh, right; I blame it more on that of course, and others blame the Achievements. Myself.... I love them; I currently have four 80's with only 1-2 world events to go to get the Violet Proto-Drakes(I'll have three when Brewfest rolls around, and another after Christmas). Some of them are fun to do, as they are challenges(getting all 5 of the BC rep dungeons now a days.... ugh), while others a major pita(I hate pvp so I have very few of those done). All in all, it's just about what you find fun in game; some enjoy the raiding circle, and others the casual experience; aka, pick an achievement at random and do it.

Okay, I'm going to put this in context.
Achievements are meaningless, they offer no reward other than your own satisfaction and the enjoyment of attempting them.
World of Warcraft is meaningless, it's just a program made out of code where you input variables and it creates a result via artificial intelligence. It only gives you satisfaction and happiness.
Life is meaningless, you're just a random piece of sentient grouping of cells, in turn a grouping of atoms, whose body is just the product of two other meaningless hunks of flesh via a self replicating code. It only gives you satisfaction and happiness.
Existence is meaningless, it is nothing but chance and we all live alone huddled in the darkness of mere being, where everything is meaningless. The greatest of writings are nothing more then carbon inscription upon a surface, the greatest of thoughts, theories, and philosophy nothing but vain products of evolution in a hunk of flesh that was lucky enough to group itself in a way that it gains sentience. Everything simply happens and morality is a conception that is meaningless because it is solely about granting meaningless beings meaning which does not exist. The best thing it can give is pleasure and satisfaction.
Now unless you agree with all those and take up nihilism, saying anything is meaningless is quite meaningless and vain. You don't do achievements, that's great. Cool story bro'. Are they meaningless? Certainly not.
So, if it's okay to hate achievements, if you happen to be a nihilist?

Except that I do, considering that I take time out to tutor newcomers to the endgame to progress them as far as possible on spec, gear, rotations and tactics (and indeed write guides on this very site). That's the way it should be. Instead, new players can learn everything possible about their class, but be denied to chance to showcase their knowledge because they don't have a Gearscore of 5k+ or a box with writing in it to show you've stepped foot in a raid instance before. How is that right?
What does this have to do with achievement hunters?

Clever, but until completing achievements affect gameplay, this statement is false.

Until gameplay affects anything in a non-virtual manner, the statement is true.

A concrete infinite is meaningless to humans.

Though, on a non-
joking
sarcastic ploy of complex philosophical concepts level, they are meaningless without something that gives them meaning(ie humanity). Achievements, WoW, life, etc are meaningless until people invest meaning into them.
