Often I think "Gee my group sure is quiet this run." Seconds later, someone says something so profoundly stupid that I wish I could go back a few seconds and prevent it from happening.
Sometimes silence is golden.

I always say hi when we start. Sometimes I will even say "good morning" (I run my dailies before work in my local AM). You would be shocked at how THAT gets a response every single time.
"LOL, ITS NIGHT HERE IN <wherever>"
and
"Yah, its already lunch time over here in <another place>"
You can ask follow-ups about their country if they seem friendly.
I don't mind quiet runs at all, although I think dropping a fish feast (like someone said on page one) is genius for an icebreaker.
The only reaction I ever take poorly is "gogogogogo". I cannot stand that.

I feel that at least the initial 'Hey there!' and 'Pleasure, see ya' are mandatory, even if that's the only thing to be said. Might be a spanish thing, but I always get a response from that lines, even if no one says anything else during the run. I usually run with friends anyways, so we go silly on group chat and pugs usually join in.

just 'Hey guys!' usually reveals the nature of the group you're in.
^^ this, very much.
I always say at least hello. If after that no-one talks, fine, no problem. If they decide to chat I'm happy to join, the heroics in itself aren't that interesting anymore after running them a million times, so it's nice to at least meet some fun people once in a while! Those are the runs I enjoy, not the completely silent 'rush to get frost from this boring instance' runs. I will take a run that takes, say, 2 minutes longer? because people are talking and being silly and having fun over a silent boring run anytime. People that are complaining that talking or having some fun is 'a waste of their time'... come on! Nonsense. Have 'fun' during your silent chore run then. I understand why you think they are boring as crap that way.
When I run with one or two friends we're usually quite chatty, we joke around, we do silly stuff. Mind you, silly stuff that is within our boundaries. So yeah, our tank might be half naked in Violet Hold too! But if he still outgears the newbie 80's in the pug by far and if I hardly have to heal him anyway, who cares! Just some weird extra fun :)
Usually when we do things like this the people in the group are joining in and having their own fun with it. We like to be nice, we like to help out the new 80's we encounter when they need it, we like to go crazy with the overgeared people we get, we like to have a good time and have people leaving with a grin on their face. And we succeed!
Don't tell me that is a 'waste of time'.. get out of grumpy land and make those boring runs fun ^_*
