I am currently using Real ID with one person. It's nice to be able to talk when they're on a different server, but I talk to them all day on gchat anyway. So, it seems kind of pointless for me...most people who you want to talk to are on some Vent server anyway.
I can see it being useful for cross-game talking, though...so we'll see how useful it becomes once SC2 (and Diablo 3) comes out.

Yup. Already using it, and it's working like a charm. 14 friends at the moment, should be up to 18 when everyone finishes accepting the invites. Several are friends from college, most of whom play on different realms. Others are my friends who play on my horde realm where I don't actively play anymore. And the rest are rl friends who play on my realm.
It's great. One thing I'd like to see added in the future is an out-of-game application that let's me chat with them while their in-game.
I think part of the problem is that most of the people who are against it just don't have friends. Sure, if you've got only 1 rl friend, the whole system seems silly and irrelevant. But if you've been gaming for years like I have, and you've become part of a large family of gamers, it's nice to have this tool. And it'll be even better once SCII and D3 are out, cause I guarantee every last one of us will be getting them.

I have friends outside my guild. However, most of my friends are also on my vent server all the time anyway. And I'm certainly not giving out my email addy -- my WoW login! -- to people. (EDIT: I set up an e-mail account, to ONLY be the login for my WoW account... and it doesn't match the name of ANY of my characters, specifically in order to prevent people from trying to hack (or lock -- with repeated false passwords, it's not hard) my account.
This implementation of the Real ID system is fundamentally flawed. Blizzard already expends a great deal of resources (money, man-hours, etc.) in fixing hacked and screwed up accounts. Maybe they'll figure out that this is a problem, after a few people who're using this feature get burned.

Plan only to use it with 2 ppl I know in RL, to see how it goes! Though adding people as friends via email puts me off with the implications of account name using the same name....they might have to make 2 lists for RL and online friends?

Not unless they adopt a sensible system that doesn't require me to give away my WoW account name in order to use it, and that allows you to hide your online status.

And what, pray tell, do you suggest they use instead?

An alias selected by the account holder - as I (and others) have suggested in several previous threads in which you've participated. It's the system used by several other MMOs.

Okay, someone now registers xaratherus before you do.
Your friends all you know as xaratherus
They add xaratherus, but get someone that's not you
uh oh...

I personally won't. My real-life friends don't play as far as I am aware, and I do agree that using the battle.net login as a requirement is a rather weak move. I would imagine that this will be abused by guild masters, quite extensively.
