The issue lies in the fact that the servers are
down
and cannot be connected to. Your personal client is unable to differentiate between the servers being down for maintainence or being unable to connect due to a flaw of your own. Blizzard assumes that you will have shut down your client and will have seen the message that the servers are going to be down. (Though I agree a simple link to the realm status page would be nice.) Additionally, in regards to the "prominent message" on the home page, Blizzard uses its WoW homepage for relevant and new information, not something that happens on a weekly basis. Blizzard actually takes more effort to communicate with customers by having an open forum entirely dedicated to explaining when realms are down and updating the current status of them.
Since you keep bringing up your time in WoW, in 4 years I've never heard of someone complaining that they didn't know about maintainence, someone who also admits they never shut down their client, when it is through the client that Blizzard has found the easiest medium to communicate with the customer.
EDIT: Why is this point so difficult to make? A new WoW user has no knowledge of the realm status webpage. A new WoW user has no knowledge of a weekly event where the servers are offline. A new WoW user is instructed by Blizzard "help" to go muck with his firewall settings and other network settings - rather than simply say "If this is Tuesday, the servers are offline." Why are you ignoring this and trying to make this out to be my problem?
Because most new users will actually shut down their client and see "We will be performing our
scheduled weekly maintainence
tomorrow and the servers will be down until approximately X time.

Guys, here's my summary of the first 1 and a half pages of this:
OP asks blizzard why they can't post WE DO SERVER MAINTENENCE EVERY TUESDAY on the wow client login screen on the Offical forums, and blizzard deletes it.
Then people proceed to tell him he's an idiot because he didn't immediately know everything abotu WoW when he started.
Seriously, I agree with the OP. Why can't blizzard say We do maintenence every tuesday, you might want to sleep in! instead of saying, The game may or may not be available at certain unspecified times. If you communicate by using legalese that doesn't make anything clearer, why even bother in the first place?
Oh, and someone said something about as long as you pay blizzard, they don't care if you die. I prefer NOT to think that blizzard executives are the devil reincarnate...

He's been playing for 3 years and Tuesday maintenance is still a suprise to the OP.

WAY to NOT read what he, or I when I was speaking about his post, said. He was talking about WHEN HE FIRST JOINED WOW AND HE DIDN'T KNOW ABOUT A TUESDAY SERVER MAINTENENCE. By the way, I would not be suprised if that was a rather pathetic attempt to troll, it was such a stupid post.
EDIT: Now that I think about it, you really must be a troll, unless you didn't read what you jsut quoted. /facepalm

Urcure, since you completely disregarded the entire rest of my post, instead only answering one section of it, then complain about us "youngsters" not understanding the point of posts:

You're very intelligent because..... the OP doesn't even clearly know what he is talking about. First his issue is this then that then a third thing. Yet I am a troll because I tried to help the guy. Put your helmet back on.

Yup deejerz, we are all idiots, and you humble us with your godlike intelligence. You are so amazing you shouldn't have to talk to us "Lesser beings". Maybe you should just leave this thread so as not to dirty your purity of heart and mind.

Go post this on the actual forums, where it will be seen by the people who can actually change something.
1. It's TUESDAY
2. There's a message on the log in screen that says "extended maintanance"
3. All you have to do is log in and when that either fails or gives you an empty list of online servers, you know WoW is still down.
4. Failing all that, there's still the realm status page.
5. It's TUESDAY
I stand by my previous comment.
It has nothing to do with you speaking the truth, you are just too damn dumb to be able to read the big frigging news box to the left of the logon screen.
And newbies will find out that the servers are down by . . . gasp . . . reading the message on the log in screen!
All things that the OP had in the first post and in several other posts after told the reasoning behind.
I know that currently, I only close the WoW client because I'm looking for updates on cataclysm.
I also know several people that would leave it open, and not think to restart the client (I.E. many people over the age of 40)
If you want to help, try READING THE ENTIRE POST. DeeJerz, It isn't very helpful to say the same thing over and over again, and get the same answer, over and over again.

I havn't read all the comments but Im slightly confused as to why you are complaining about something that you didn't know about three years ago. I knew about weekly maintenance from the first time it happened when I was playing. You log on Monday night, you see a notice. You log on Tuesday, you see a notice. Whenever they are doing maintenece on realms they say so.
