Battle.net Real ID System - Call To Arms

I am a software developer, a long time on/off wow player - I been around a while. I love Blizzard products and what they do. I feel that the new Real ID system, is flawed
if
the new system functions as advertised.
I hope i get some thoughtful and mature responses. "
well, don't friend with real id then
". That solves no Issie here, and is a cop out due to lack of creativity.
My point here is Blizzard has made a very powerful new addition to the game that has by its nature, made it self almost unusable in fact causes possible problems. I dare say that the only people not having much of an issue will be the younger less mature children who play the game. Who, probably should not be subjected to lack of privacy controls to begin with!
ISSUES:
1. Blizzard themselves have said, "use it for Family, Friends, and those you trust". This makes sense since I will now be sharing my
real name
.
So let's go forth with the assumption that i will only Use Real ID for Family and Friends, that would in fact be the responsible thing to do.
2. All toons are included, once you friend a person (in the Real ID system) no matter what toon you log onto they know. That means that if I log off and say "gnight, take care" When i log onto my level one bank ^&*!@, you know, not only do you know you now know my bank toon name. If i want to go level that Level 52 Rogue no one knows about, you know the one we all play when we just want to be left alone and zone out in game - you will know that too.
This now makes even my closest friends off limits, i'm human, sometimes i just want to be left alone, WOW is my escape, sometimes i neeed that escape from my friends and family too. If guild drama comes up, or any other thing that makes me want to lay low, I can't, not even across realms.
My friends will now get tells from Raid Leaders, Hey, is ______ online? I don't think i have ditched on a raid in about 2 years but that is besides the point, now i can't. This is a game, and blizzard just added too much real.
3. What happens when my GM or Raid Leader wants to be my friend with Real ID, what happens when my game friend wants to be friends with real ID but.. i'm not really that close to the guy? Will some nut job GMs now require you Real ID friend them to be on the raid team?
SOLUTION
I feel Blizzard has implemented this with the Facebook privacy mind set. THEY know what's best for us - NOT we know what's best for ourselves.
As a software developer, i realize why they did things this way. Managing settings for ONE global account is trivial compared to having to add a setting to each and every character record on that account.
Solution to make real ID global to friends, family AND acquaintances.
Web Settings
What Name to use
() Use my real name on my Real ID account
() Use My First Name Only
() Use this Character name (your main) on your Real ID account
What Characters to include in Real ID
(x) MainToon
(x) AltToon
(x) AltToonTwo
() BankToon
() LevelingToon
When creating a new character, the screen should prompt:
Would you like to include this character in the Battle.net real ID system (You can always change this setting in the account privacy interface page)
PROBLEM SOLVED. This takes the system from Useful to only the 12 year old who should not have access to it to begin with to globally useful to everyone. TO be honest, i know damn well blizzard is aware of this, and this initial push, is more market research to see who we adapt to it then it is useful to the community.

1) Yes, that's the intended design goal.
2) I'm pretty sure the three people I'm adding as Real ID friends would be aware that I was doing my auction/bank management for the night if I was on my bank alt. Oh, and the whole "Busy - Do Not Disturb" setting in the friends list takes care of the whole "I don't want to be bothered" thing.
3) Tell them no. I already told my GM that neither she nor her officers were getting my Real ID and if she didn't like it, she could gkick me.
Control your own security. Don't expect Blizzard to do it for you.

Ok...how about you rant when the servers and web services are live? I personally don't care if my friends see me online after I "log out." The see me in Steam anyway.
The real "PROBLEM SOLVED" don't accept Real ID friend requests from people. It's completely optional, and you have to accept it.

I would, Blizzard did not give us any privacy settings.

Again this is not a problem solved this is a "Don't use the system"
DEMAND PRIVACY SETTINGS

They gave you the ultimate privacy setting, decline the invite. Maybe it needs to be tweaked some more, but if you are concerned with people knowing you're online, maybe you need to take a break and re-evaluate your "free time."

Sure they did. They gave you the privacy setting of "EVERY REAL ID CONNECTION IS A TWO-WAY AGREEMENT AND IF YOU ENTER INTO ONE WITH SOMEONE YOU KNEW WHAT IT ENTAILED".
If you don't want someone to know your name, don't give them your Real ID or accept one from them. I am giving mine to my girlfriend, my younger brother, and my best RL friend,
and that's it,
because I get how the system was designed.

I guess its the well thought out software developer in me. I see real ID as having SO much game potential, instead it will go the way of the AMAZING NEW VOICE SYSTEM. useless.

It's already been discussed a number of times on here.
I won't be using RealID because I disagree with the way that it's set up. Blizzard is trying to make RealID something like "BlizzBook", which, to be honest, is more than it needed to be.
Had Blizzard looked at the other MMOs out there that have used a more robust, globally-based chat system (such as City of Heroes and Champions Online), they would have seen the way it should be done: A unique pseudonym, selected by the player, which you would use to /gfriend them,
and
the ability to globally hide while online if you so chose.
As an example, my global handle when I played CoH was Richter86; when I approved someone's global friend request, they could see me online as Richter86, and could send me whispers at that name. However, if I chose to do so, I could type /ghide, and would show as offline to people, both on my friends list and to my global friends.
I think the thing that really bugs me about RealID is that the real name on the account is displayed on the Friends list, so even if I keep
my
account secure, a "RealID" friend would reveal my real name if their account got compromised.
WoW needed a global chat system; what it got instead is, in my opinion, the offspring of a cobbled-together Facebook rip-off and a privacy nightmare.
If you don't want someone to know your name, don't give them your Real ID or accept one from them. I am giving mine to my girlfriend, my younger brother, and my best RL friend, and that's it, because I get how the system was designed.
Oh, I understand exactly how the system was designed. However, I personally think that design is idiotic and that it introduces a number of completely unnecessary security gaffs in order to use it.

That is such a cop out. In other words, don't use the system. YOU ARE correct. that is the NO BRINER answer. WE ALL KNOW THIS, this does not solve any issues to good software design.

...you're SERIOUSLY comparing Real ID, which does not reveal your email address beyond the first time you connect with someone, to Champions Online, which puts your account name in
every single chat message sent by you?
And you claim Real ID is a "security nightmare"?
USE THE SYSTEM HOW BLIZZARD INTENDED IT TO BE USED.

Did Blizzard twist your arm and force you to use it? No. My guild leader wants my RealID? Too bad. Gkick me if you insist on having it. I understand the system could be improved, but until then I won't use it. How hard is that?

WTB Offline Mode imo.. i think that would work and allow an option to set upon login

Does anyone know for a fact that you will NOT be able to select which characters are viewable? I haven't seen any details on options.
Well, thats is why i said IF as advertised, because right now the blizzard FAQ touts this as an AMAZING NEW feature. No matter where you are, they will see you, and MANY MANY people have complained with no blue post to say otherwise.

Oh, you mean the kludgy system that didn't
require
you to use your account name, but which was misworded to make you think it needed your acccount name, resulting in a huge number of tickets requesting to get the name changed to protect security?
Yeah, I referred to it - briefly. Note that mostly I referred to CoH. Note also that the small revelation of the account name is nothing compared to revealing the account owner's real name on your RealID friends list.
I have no problem with not using it, because I consider it absolutely moronic design that should have been avoided by a megalithic company like Blizzard - especially when all they had to do was copy something that's already out there in a working form.

Blizzard's FAQ also touts as a "completely optional and voluntary level or identity."
Also, "We plan to update our Parental Controls with tools that will allow parents to manage their children's use of Real ID. We'll have more details to share in the future."
There's your future level of privacy.

If you really want to keep your privacy, don't add RealID friends. Same with Facebook - if you don't trust it, why use it?
I certainly won't be using Real ID for a good month or so.
