I thought the gun was just a reference to the Mako Cannon in FFVII.

(the cannon they're having the fight on).

na, it's already stated that stormwind is very close to the "Ground Zero" of the re-emergance of deathwing, goblins don't join the horde untill after the cataclysmic reshape of the world has happened, but stormwind gets hit the moment deathwing is out of his former home.
what I can see, is that maybe the horde is using that BFG as a deterrance policy against the horde, much the same way as USA and Russia and China use nukes as a deterrant force to prevent each from atacking the other. "you don't hit us, we don't hit you" that's sort of how deterrance works.
of course for this to have any validity, the alliance would need an equally powerfull weapon aimed at the horde, that way if 1 atacks, the other one retalliates.

it was mentioned in the recent blitz of info that deathwing isn't rising from grim batol, but from our of the maelstrom:
"Deepholm is the Elemental Plane of Earth, where Deathwing has been resting and being "rebuilt." Contrary to what we heard at BlizzCon 09, Deathwing will not be breaking into Azeroth via Grim Batol. He has broken through Deepholm and then through the Maelstrom. The Skybreaker and Orgrim's Hammer are present in Deepholm, though the Skybreaker has shot down the Horde ship."

Also somewhere in those articles it was mentioned that Deathwing attacekd stormwind for killing Onyxia and displaying her head as a trophy (likely also reclaiming it)

Simply from the spelling of the first post I'm going to guess he's still coming from deepholme
From Deepholme, yes. But where we will burst out into Azeroth seems to have been changed to the Maelstrom (which doesn't make a lot of sense to me but well).
