I am trying to help someone with their resto shaman and I was wondering what gems should they gem? should they match the socket colors and if only for something good what would the socket bonus be that is considered good.
I know in the red sockets he needs runed cardinal ruby but I am not sure if in the yellow he also wants them or should he use the Luminous Ametrine and in the blue should he be using Royal Dreadstone or not.
I have a feeling I know but for the leg enchant should it be Brilliant or Saphire spellthread.

Actually, he should probably use the
Reckless Ametrine
(+12 SP, +10 Haste) in red slots. "Haste, haste, HASTE!" is the mantra of the experts who have run the numbers. Although, I admit I slightly dialed my haste back down in order to get my socket bonuses and a bit more MP/5 regen in the mean-time. Yellow would be
Quick King's Amber
(+20 Haste). Blue, you can either place Quick King's Amber (and forego socketing bonuses), or use the
Energized Eye of Zul
. (+10 Haste and +5 MP/5)
And... well, if he really, really thinks he wants oodles of spell power? Putting two Reckless Ametrines into a red and yellow slot (vs. a Runed Cardinal Ruby and a Quick King's Amber) would yield a net increase of +1 spellpower for the combination. The Runed Cardinal only gives you +23 SP, after all.
EDIT: Oh, and for the meta? The
Insightful Earthsiege Diamond
is the recommended gem, until one gets geared up quite a bit more. (as in, having dual-Solace trinkets. One norm, one heroic)

and what about the leg enchant?

Heh, I could probably give you all the best answers, but it might save both of us time for me to point you to the
Resto-Shaman bible
at ElitistJerks.com. (In their forums, under TheoryCrafting Think-Tank and Shaman: Restoration)
The URL changes every once in awhile. But you can find it easily enough, if you know where to go.

That spirit enchant is like... 10mp5 5 seconds after not casting? I can't imagine you putting that to any use except on Putricide normal and Sindragosa's pre-icetombing in p2. In neither of those situations should your spirit based regen have any relevance so take the stamina one.

Actually, Spirit will be our means of regen (like Priests and Druids), after Cataclysm drops. We'll all be changing our enchants, and prolly some of our gemming choices.

So, hold onto this 'advice' until Cata. Until it drops, spirit is useless.
And they'll likely change over your current gems. Spellpower haste gems will become int/haste, haste/mp5 gems will become haste/spirit.
