I understand why people use Gear Score, a quick way to determine where they're at currently (in regards to gear and possibly experience on that character) without having to armory them.
Of course you will get some elitist, in anything you will come across. So just ignore those type of people, a lot of the time they're probably looking to get some sort of reaction out of you as well.
At least on my realm, some people laugh at me for trying to form pugs with a highish GS requirement. The reason for this is because I'm simply not interested in forming a group for ICC, get the first 4 bosses and leave (not sure what it's like on other realms - but this is the standard on mine). I still manually check people when I'm whispered for their gear, enchanting and gemming. Also I check their achievements because A LOT of people lie about their achievements using the addon.
People say gear does not equal skill, quite rightly so. But why can't I have both?

Why raidleaders don't prefer skil over gear?
Who sais you're skilled? You?
A lot of people say they're pretty skilled. And know wtf to do. How often is this actualy true?
I have taken some normal geared people to places like ToC10/25 and even ICC10 and everytime they underperform. I was easely capeble of 5k DPS with mainly Nax25/Ulduar10 gear(wasn't in a guild in 3.1), I have yet to see a "skilled player" according to them reach even close to that.
Most people simply suck. Have no clue what to do and want free gear because they know it can. The good always pay for the bad, always been like that and you better get used to it.

Pretty much this.
Gear can be seen. Skill has to be proven. From a raid leader's perspective it's usually easier (and smarter) to trust in the better geared person's abilities.
And then there are situations where no amount of skill can make up for a lack of gear.

Everytime i say that.
In my guild we use GS exclusively for epeen flexing. Our realm is not very big. We know who is good, and who is bad. We do not mind to take undergeared people into our PuGs, when we know their mains, and their guilds.
For me, GS is nothing but a tool to get authority over people with a certain mind-set. Numerous times have i done 2 times more threat than the tank with a 1k GS advantage. Numerous times have i tanked stuff that should have been too difficult for my GS.
<- my 2 cents on GS vs. Skill.

So, let's see. He tells you (admittedly, it sounds like more rudely than was necessary) that your gear score is lower than you can get from just doing heroics (true), and your counterargument is... well you need to be skilled to be skilled.
Yup, sounds like an elitist. Good choice of word to make yourself feel better without having to think.

The only problem I see with GS is that you get retards who only look at the number, and don't even know you can A) Use it to inspect people, and B) that it tells you the recommended GS for each level of play (e.g. ICC10 recommends 4700)
On my server we routinely get people who will spam trade with nonsense like "LFM ToC10 5.2k min GS + link achieve for invite" when clearly they have no idea wtf they're talking about and simply jumping in the GS bandwagon (because someone with a 5.2k GS has no need for any item that drops in ToC10 barring POSSIBLY a trinket, or the 232 shield off Anub'arak).
Skill is always better than GS, but as someone else said YOU can claim to be a great player... how do I as a raid leader (not that I am one, just saying IF) know you're skilled? EVERYONE claims to be great if you ask them. GS at least gives an indicator. It's... really like getting a bachelor's degree in the real world. Do you need one? Of course not. But it's an indicator that you've put in effort to SHOW that you're good, instead of just saying "I'm good, I don't need to prove it". Sure, you can be a scrub with close to a 5K GS just from running heroics and buying crafted pieces. I've met a lot of them. But the 5K GS shows that you've at least put in some effort to gear your character up, and then your skill (or lack thereof) will be shown in the raid. Saying that you don't need to gear up because you're that damn good is just stupid.
Now yes, a person who would kick you out of, say, a random heroic because you don't have a 4K GS is a total retard and deserves to be hit with a brick. Someone who won't let you in a Naxx or OS raid because you're <4K GS is equally retarded. But VOA10 (it's VOA btw, not AV. AV = Alterac Valley to most people, hence the initial confusion), at this stage of the game, is intended for ToC10 geared people (Toravon dropping 251 gear on 10 aka ICC10 gear). Using the GS addon itself as a guide, the minimum for this would be roughly 4700, maybe with some leeway because it really boils down to good DPS and someone with a high GS can have pathetic DPS, and someone with a low GS can do great DPS.
In short: Elitists really do use GS wrong and make a lot of us hate the addon, but the OP seems to be arguing that they don't need to gear up because their skill makes up for it. Maybe if you were in Undergeared that would be fine. But for 99% of the rest of us, you still need adequate gear for raids, and it's not the fault of the GS addon nor the "GS Elitists" to call you out for saying "I'm good enough for end-game raids in my heroic blues because I'm skilled" when they have no idea who you are or what your skill is.

In my guild we use GS exclusively for epeen flexing.
We use it for the lullz somtimes within the guild(mixing gearsets to get your top gearscore and al that), but that's not what we're talking about here right? We're talking about Pug's here. I don't know you(you being whoever /w's me) so unles you're in a guild I know to be decent I'm going to consider you a moron.
Everyone is a moron for me until proven otherwise. Rude? Maybe, but at least I don't have to be disappointed everytime a moron fails.

Oh yeah I forgot WoW-Heroes score. I don't get why the GS addon didn't use that, instead of it's own artificial numbers. Wow-heroes at least shows you quickly what gems and such a person has, a well as the bar that shows what their skill level is ready for.

GS and Skill both matter. If you entirely lack one, you're useless. Both can, somewhat, compensate for the other. Anyone who thinks either gear is everything or gear is nothing doesn't know what they're doing.
