Heh, up to you man, make it as long or as short as you want(well, by short, we don't mean one line lol). If you do decide to do a multi-parter, try what some users have been doing; just put all three parts in the same thread, by saving posts.

Well, Morec writes long ones, and people read them. Patty and Hyper go back and forth between lengths, and those ones work out. Skreeran does the same, and has started in with the reserving posts for most of his current works(just to help heh). I... I go for long or short, depending on if it's needed or not, so it's really up to you man.
But yeah, longer then a paragraph is usually a good start heh.
Edit:
Good guide to scan through as well.

well, I tend to make what I write quite long :P is a collateral damage of not speaking english as my main language, I can't quite compress stuff quite as easily and naturally as when I do so in spanish.
this is why my one and only english fan-fic (Descent into Darkness) is quite long. Their spanish counterparts (Decenso a la Oscuridad, and El llamado de los Elementos) are much much longer :D
That being said, I don't like to clog up the forums with multiple endless threads, so if I write something I tend to keep it all on 1 post, and reserve the first 5 or 6 spots to add further chapters.
as for the length of each chapter, :P again quite long, dunno but at least on my opinion, having a chapter that covers only a small figment of an event isn't quite nice, both ends of the rope are bad.
on one side you have chapters "knaak-sized" wich are so long is almost imposible to read a full one in a single session (at least to me it was) and on the other side there's some people who write their chapters in barely 4 paragraphs :S
find a balancing point when you wish to publish something, what I do is usually: Write the whole thing as 1 single story, no chapters, and then I cut it down in more digestible pieces. I start reading from the line 1 at a slow but steady pace, and once I'm 10 minutes (or 15) reading I make a cut, and that's chapter 1, and I rinse and repeat for chapter 2, and then for 3 and so long.
I know that's not exactly the best way to structure a story (often the cut would happen in an event that is best described in 1 chapter rather than ending it on pointless cliffhangers) wich is why this isn't an exact science.
=/ I'd continue doing my fan-fic on this board (it's QUITE extensive on the spanish version) but alas, work and the baby have kept me from it.
as for making your protagonists non-sues....... that's a hard one, I wish to believe my characters aren't sues, but it's an allways present danger. A good idea is to NEVER make your characters stronger than the titular characters at any moment, for example my main character "Shakduhn" is an orc shaman but he's in no way stronger than thrall, nor is he significant in orcish society on any form.
also if your character is combat-oriented, make sure to have them defeated at least once, so that they aren't percieved as "invincible", nothing is more boring than a character who never loses a single combat, it makes the story predictable, as if he or she has never been beated, whenver you do a combat the readers can expect the ending already. By making your character as mortal as anyone else, it creates some expectations on them.

I have been thinking of writing a fanfic for some time, I have a good idea for it, but I am busy writing stuff for various projects so I doubt I will ever get started on the fanfic anyway
But yeah, you can make your fanfics as long as you want really, just make sure you structure them properly with paragraphs or gaps etcetera so that it just a massive wall of text which often puts people off as they often feel discouraged by big walls of text.

Wow, I just noticed the BLATANT GRAMMATICAL ERROR in the title.
Guh. What a nice start.
As Adamsm said, my lengths vary. It really depends on what you think you can fit into one part, if it's a longish fanfic. I can go between 1 and a bit pages on word to about 4, and that depends on how far my creative juices (lolinnuendo) are flowing. If it's a one parter, my advice would be to make them on the 'longish' side of what is long for you, because it's only brief. 15,000 words is a big-ass assignment though, most of my fanfics tend to be much >1000 words.

I think
Death's Redemption
was around six thousand words. I'm not sure about
Scouring a Blue Soap
(then again, I'm not sure if that one counts).
For that matter, does a
partial treatise on draenei
(from the viewpoint of a gnome mage) count?

I'd guess so, it's a documentary-style fan-fic :P still counts (and it was very entertaining BTW)

There will, by the way, eventually be a sequel. (Although I've gotten more requests for sequels to
D.R.
, which is a bit ironic; it was meant to work as a standalone.)

Hmm, it would be an interesting read. The characters themselves look to have good backstories, but its hard to gauge both them and the story itself without actually seeing in action.

I've written one one-shot, and it was around 3k words. Any length is fine honestly, as long as it keeps the reader involved. I've read one story and it was written in such an interesting style.. called spartan style I think, though I've never been able to find any more about that style.
Anyways, the fic's chapter lengths varied greatly. There was one chapter that was only one line, and others that were a few thousand words, and many in between. It was quite an interesting read.
The characters and ideas you have seem pretty interesting (:

One eency-wincy criticism of your characters so far is "jin" in the troll's name...that seems (from what I've seen anyway; Sen'jin, Vol'jin, Zul'jin) to indicate a tribal leader. Other than that, I have no qualms. ;)

Yah, I noticed that and I'd fix it by writing it Dangin, but let's just say that doesn't work. Still need to work on the name though. I like the prefix Dan.
How about Dantembe?
I'd make it Dan'tembe, just because it changes how it's pronounced, and sounds 'better.' You can even add a Zandali meaning to the words.
