Because they have nothing better to do.

Because, when they measure that 11 million players. They count all active accounts, including duplicates for people who dulebox. Some say they also include all the inactive accounts, but im not sure about that.
Plus you have to figure, how many realms are there? And include the specific region realms.
As for you seeing the same six people, I believe that's a bit of an exaggeration. Yes, there are people who like to sit in trade 24/7-365. People tend to get into a routine, and you just happen to be there at the same time others are. Also, there are how many major cities across the game, they could be anywhere passing through. Then again i have a duel box that i have my banker sitting in Stormwind at all times, so he may be one of them. I tend to enjoy arguing with trade trolls.

does every realms trade chat have the SAME six people on all the time?
Because most people don't chat in trade. A lot of people often even have trade turned off. I know I usually have trade chat turned off about half the time. And general chat as well. Too many trolls.
Heh, that's why you use report spam; shuts them up while you do your business in the city.

It can't possibly be for social reasons... because honestly... trade chatters are NEVER civil... ever... they're either:
They're always about social reasons. Why would an antisocial person deliberately act like an idiot when he/she cares nothing of the attention. You don't define social by intellectual value or civility, that would be socially acceptable.
Most common causes of trade chat trolling include: seeking higher status by repeatedly stating your accomplishments, seeking higher status by making up totally improbable stories about your accomplishments, seeking acceptance in society by acting like a witless moron, a.k.a. clown, seeking dominance by belittling and insulting others, seeking control by trying to start trends, a.k.a. anal spam. See a common pattern here? I've actually ran across people who would score on all of the above at different times.
So, yeah, those are the infamous 6 people on trade. Or 60, but you ignore the rest. Those interested in an intellectual debate quickly find out that it's not a good place, because only they seem to realize that someone using a complete fallacy as an argument loses by default. People actually interested in trading don't have much use of the channel (WTB x 50g, repeat once the chat fills up, ignore what others are saying pretty much sums it up). If you're doing repeated advertising you generally don't pay attention to trade, either.

Don't know about the morons with the stupid jokes and stuf but if you're talking about normal discussions and conversations. Often people wil get a resonce by f.ex. putting somthing for trade up and being noticed by an old friend. That way they get chatten for a while and another friend of one of the 2 joins in etc.
Had a lot of good discussions on tradechat, especiely at night.

It's funny how sombody from a decent guild never joins into that at al. The ones that try that often can forget about getting any respect in the future so it's pretty counter-productive if you ask me.

I've seen members of all the top guilds on my server troll many times.

It has a LOT to do with most players completely ignoring trade.... and a few attention seekers treating trade like Yahoo! chat... except they think they're cooler because it's in wow.... yeah.. I don't get it either....

Fixed.
