Please tell me if/how my logic fails.
Thinking that you'll be able to level a DPS toon using LFD.
Edit: With that in mind, I'd follow the stickies if I were you.

I levelled my fire mage partly through LFDs. It wasn't that bad
But you definitely need to quest a bit, coz the wait for the dungeon to pop might take a while.
As for spec, I don't think it really matters when you're levelling, so just take what you like. I would caution you to keep one thing in mind while in a dungeon ... go for short casting spells. While Fireball might hit hard, chances are things are dead before you even finish casting.
In terms of Arcane, this means you should make sure that if you're casting AM, that all bolts hit the target. AM is a powerful spell, but it comes with a hefty cost. Missing any bolts really makes the spell inefficient. You might want to stick with Scorch when the mobs life gets low.
I wouldn't really bother with Slow in a dungeon. By the time you do get it, tanks would have access to their combat slow, rendering it pointless. And you can probably skip TTW until much later in the game.
And one final tip, Blizzard should still be doing better damage than AE, so use that for AOE encounters.

I would say that you can level while using the LFD system, however I agree with Nick, you have to be questing while you wait for the queue to pop. you will level so much faster if you quest in between dungeons, that's how I've been leveling my shaman and mage the last few weeks. I would say that when you hit 51, depending on how your battlegroup is, switch to doing AV, the exp gains are really good when you win, and since people generally don't have any idea what they are doing when in BRD or BRS or Scholomance... well, you get the picture. When you get to OL though it gets alot easier because people actually know the instances

I leveled my mage as Frost via the LFD tool. It also allowed for quick quest grinding as well, and helps the healer out with your own personal absorbtion shield.
Leveling was so much easier w/ LFD then without it. Made the pain levels of 20-40 bearable!
.
Are you talking about Ice Barrier? Coz you can only get at level 40.
Honestly, from level 20-40, there's not much difference in survivability between the specs in a dungeon. :)

Each AM missile crit only returns 6% of your base mana, so you'd only get 30% of your base mana if all the missiles critted.

Also note:
Blizzard can be cast at a distance so it requires you to generate 130% threat.
Arcane Explosion is in melee range so only needs 110% threat, and then they kill you.
