I noticed you took out the little tooltip that said it was temporary. I guess the lie was too embarrassing after this long? :)

Well, it said 'lame and temporary', but it stopped being lame when we restructured the forum so Google could read post contents. Before, it was just a forum title search.

Oh, so you're gaming the definition of what aspect of it was "temporary". Everyone thought you'd implement your own, but you're saying you really wanted to use Google the whole time, but couldn't use it properly until you restructured the site. I see :).

That'd be the ideal solution, but is still much more involved than making our forums more google-friendly.

We wanted to implement our own, but restructuring the site so that Google properly indexed our pages was a higher priority. Now that we've done that, Google searches work better on our forums than they did before, so the need is now less than it was.
