I normally VT + SWP (for the 10%
buff
), then MF. No need to lose DP off the boss if you have enough people on the add. VT is too strong; it's definitely required.
I'll also MF the boss to keep up SWP before it drops off.

"John #$#*(&@ Madden" is sometimes used in WoW as a reference to play styles of certain classes because they have no set rotation, no FCFS, or the rotation that they have is a matter of priorities and not a true rotation itself.

SPriest is about using MB on CD, maintaining all your DoTs which all come off at separate times (Minus SW:P), and spamming Mind Flay in between. The rotation is never the same, it always changes during a fight.

I'm standing by my assessment though. We have a closet American hiding in the weeds of foggy England. No true, proper Brit would ever play in such a messy, uncontrolled style.

I got in the habit of putting all 3 dots up. It is quite beneficial if somebody screws up and there is an add up during a phase change and DP does 23% of it's damage initially so it only takes a couple ticks before it starts becoming a dps upgrade on the ooze. Plus, DP can be caste while moving.
If the orange ooze is targeting you, you should be casting SW:D on CD, keep SW:P up, and spam DP. If you get a chance to stop, turn around, and cast VT it's well worth it at the beginning.

You do realize there are ways to avoid this, right? Assuming the raid is as organized as you make it sound, I don't see why anyone should be " around like a headless chicken."
