Instant death isn't as common as pop culture would have us believe. You wouldn't last long in lava, but the initial shock of hitting lava may just keep you from feeling the searing pain until you pass out. It still wouldn't be a pleasant way to go
I've got no sources to back me up, but I'd be inclined to think that the transferral of heat from the lava to the brain would near-instantly kill the individual cells, so even if the physical cells wouldn't break down and 'melt', per se, we'd still be clinically dead. The human head doesn't have enough insulation to slow down the heat transfer process by much.

That would likely be true if you dove head-first into the lava. But, going head-first hardly says 'accident' to me.
I actually think the likely accident is to take a step and either slip on a loose rock (in which case, you'll fall on your back, or at least, tumble), or that part of the walkway will crumble under your foot, causing you to fall sideways.
Either way, you don't have much time to tumble, so it actually is reasonably likely that you'll land head-first, or at least, 'not feet-first' - see the Mythbuster's explanation for why bread lands buttered side down. As long as it's not feet-first, your head will hit the lava just as quickly as if you were going head-first, so it's a moot point, I think. But amusing, nonetheless.

So, you've avoided the question thus far.
I'll greatly increase the distance for you - give you time to think. Make it a crevasse, with lava, in a 'lava cave'.
What goes through your brain before it gets fried?
I didn't avoid the question.
I don't know that you'd have enough time to process anything other than a 'whoops' reaction from slipping

Probably this:
♪ This was a triumph. I'm making a note here: HUGE SUCCESS.
It's hard to overstate my satisfaction.
Aperture Science: We do what we must, because we can.
For the good of all of us, except the ones who are dead...
But there's no sense crying over every mistake.
You just keep on trying till you run out of cake.
And the Science gets done.
And you make a neat gun.
For the people who are still alive.

Been stuck in my head all week, I can't imagine a lava cave would change that.

My foot.
For real: I probably wouldn't be capable of conscious thought as I screamed and instinctively shot my hand out to grab whatever could stop me from falling.
