What about the Armor enchant that Hatman555 pointed out for the hands. I use the extra armor over the 18 stam for my hands... Its 225 armor vs. 18 Stam.
What glove enchant? I'm guessing you meant
Glove Reinforcements
(240 armor), with the only other viable glove armor enchant being
Reticulated Armor Webbing
(885 armor), which is already included in the Engineering section.
If I read
this
right, armor converts to stamina at about a ratio of 1:0.0855, which means the
Glove Reinforcements
are worth ~20.5 Stamina. So in terms of physical EH, the difference is 2.5 Stam. In any fight with magical and/or bleed damage (read: nearly every fight), the value of armor depreciates linearly with the amount of magic damage taken - 20% magic damage makes your armor 20% less effective.
TL;DR: In a fight with purely physical damage,
Glove Reinforcements
is the better choice, but for a fight where ~12% or more of the damage taken is magical/bleed damage, the
Stamina
will be equal or better. For a good, all-around choice, take the
Stamina
.
Edit: 225 Armor is the cloak enchant, and is already listed as the recommended choice.
You still haven't said why LoH is
bad
. You've just stated that you have another passive heal waiting, but from your post I don't see why I should use that instead of LoH. You need to mention that it cannot be used within two minutes of a much better tanking cooldown.
I've edited the abilities section to include LoH, and explained why it should rarely, if ever, be used.
EDIT: Added the bit about the cloak enchant.

I'm not really sure if anybody already pointed this out, but you say that HoS glyph replaces the threat reduction effect. This is wrong. With the glyph both effects are applied, thus making it a bad glyph if you have problems holding aggro.

A bunch of stuff + zealous use of "FOTM."
To me, your comment, while detailing several areas that can be improved, felt extremely condescending and antagonistic. I understand that you have a TON of experience, but I personally would appreciate it if you didn't call some of my ideas "bull," as well as indirectly insinuate that I'm a bad player - the value of your advice is clouded by your word choice, and I feel like I'm being attacked, rather than helped. I appreciate feedback and constructive criticism, almost as much as I appreciate tact.
More stuff.
More stuff.
To all:
If you'll read through the first couple pages of this guide, it quickly becomes apparent that, in it's original form, this guide was quite flawed, and that I had a lot to learn. I went back and made some edits today, all before reading your comments. Most of the issues that you guys pointed out have now been addressed, and I really appreciate the feedback - it's my hope that making this guide better will make the Prot Paladin community at large better. There are a few things, however, that I'm not willing to change.
As the title of the thread states, this is intended as a starter guide, and not as an all-inclusive in-depth look at all things Prot. As such:
o
I won't to go into detail on the math of defense/resilience. This isn't meant to be a theory-crafting thread. Yes, you can raid with less than 540 defense + some resilience (or even without the resilience), but I'm not going to tell new tanks that it's okay to be below the soft cap.
o
I won't be changing the recommended path to becoming a tank. As stated in the intro, one of my basic assumptions is that you are already level 80, and now you want to get into tanking. Nowhere do I condone ninja-ing drops, and in fact, I say to clear it with the tank. Additionally, almost anyone who has never tanked before is going to be a bad tank, regardless of gear - they just don't know enough.
o
As far as chain pulling, most beginning tanks I've seen
don't
chain pull - mostly a lack of confidence. For a new tank, I feel that it's more important for them to learn the rotation than it is to constantly be pulling. A tank who can't properly tank 3 mobs is going to do more harm than good by pulling more mobs. I do agree that at later levels they should do just as you've said, but again, this is a starter guide. You're free to write your own guide on how getting into tanking may be done.
Unfortunately, not all of us have been playing for 3+ years, so I guess that may appear as FoTM to you WoW grizzled veterans. I do the best with what I know. I've learned a bit from your comments, so the guide has been improved because of it. Thanks!

Several constructive things.
Edited several things, though I left the gear section alone. I'll probably update it (soon!) to include T10 items now that they're farmable.
Bump: Update for 4.0.1!
Note: Anyone wishing to QQ over using a WoG-centric build, please start a new thread, and provide some definitive math. I'd like to see some hard numbers showing that a WoG build will be necessary in Cata before I change my spec, not an OMGWTFNOWOG?1! thread.

Nice, keep updating ftw.
I wouldn't link to wiki unless is something not already covered and generally updated here in this community. (macros). Even then, link to somewhere like MT. Generally these are the places the wiki draws from, and the macro sections there really need to be wiped clean as they are unorganized.

Been looking into tanking since 4.0.1, nice information indeed! Ty! I'll start prepping for a go in norm dungeons if I have time!

one of the best guides and more detail then any I have seen.
like your inclusion on why your auras and blessings.
Most guides don't even mention them.
Just like Judgement of Truth all of this has changed now.
as far as this
/script DEFAULT_CHAT_FRAME:AddMessage("Need 102.4 combat table coverage. Currently at: "..string.format("%.2f", GetDodgeChance()+GetBlockChance()+GetParryChance()+5))
I have read some arguements about this value and the 15% miss built into everything.
some are saying that 87 is the min since it would take into account of the 15% miss is this correct?

Aestu the reason I like this guide (and I think people should read the ones you linked as well)
so many people assume you already know that X was changed to Y and then go from there.
They then say Y and people are thinking ..... but isn't it X enchant or X aura ?
Sure they can say make sure and start your rotation with AS but never mention another spell.
I have seen on some guides that some of the spells they say get A MUST HAVE are never even mentioned in their rotations.
can you reforge resilience ?

It's worth noting that the "rotations" posted in the guide are, in fact, Priority systems, and not literal rotations. Factoring in cooldowns and the priority order, it would end up essentially the same as what you put, Aestu. Elorivan's priority queue seems to be the same as Theck's, minus the inclusion of using Judgment to fish for Sacred Duty just before a ShoR.
