So I picked up a virus "Infostealer". My virus scanner has quarantined the file. But it keeps trying to activate when I log into WoW.
When I go to the directory where the file is supposed to be, I do not see the file name "d:\worldofwarcraft\scan.dll.new".
Can someone please tell me how to get rid of this thing.
I have an authenticator on my account, and changed my account name and password once I found this virus and had it quarantined.

The file might be "hidden", so if you can set your folders to show such files, you should be able to locate it.
Otherwise... I think most Anti-Virus programs definition of quarantine involves moving the file. Probably depends on which one you use though.

Thank you all for your responses.
I have been running WoW on a Toshiba Qosmio. It is about 1 1/2 years old now and has been running a bit hot. I needed to get it into be cleaned anyway, so I have decided to let a professional deal with this problem.
I asked and was told that they will reformat the drives and reinstall the OS. The particular keylogger I have "apparently" tends to replicate itself in new and novel locations making it extremely time consuming to eradicate.
I am just very glad I got the authenticator months ago.

That's good.
Don't forget to change your password anyway, just to be on the safe side. I guess you have already done that, however :)

Yes indeed.
As soon as the virus was blocked and quarantined I changed my username and then the password.
Thanks again for the assistance.

Are you using Norton by any chance? If so, there are reports floating around this morning that the lastest Norton update has caused a false positive especially with WoW players.

Yes, I am using Norton.
I very rarely shut down the computer, so Norton is constantly doing LiveUpdate.

Why is AVG so damned popular? Avast and Avira both work better, and they cost just as much as AVG (nothing).

I have Norton and haven't experienced this.
Norton is a horrible resource pig and I find it to be one of if not the worst anti-virus out there.
Norton 2010 is an entirely different animal, one of the lightest and fastest on the market. Symantec finally realized that sucking was bad for business.

In a world of rootkits the sad reality of modern viruses is that once you're infected, you can never again trust what your computer tells you until you wipe it clean and start again. Which is exactly what I do whenever I come across an infected machine, and what I suggest to others.
Unfortunately this is seldom convenient.
