QFT. All in all, Salt Lake is probably not impressive enough to warrant building an entire vacation around (unless you're Mormon), but it is definitely incredibly beautiful. I still only went because my grandparents lived there at one time, though.
From my own experience I'd recommend South Africa, except they've had huge problems with crime in the last few years, or Greece, if you bring along some extra bribe money and try to avoid riots.
New Orleans is pretty cheap and pretty fun. You'll get slow-cooked if you go in high summer, though (although we had a cold winter, so if that lasts it won't be too bad). There's actually quite a lot of history around it, and if you like food you can't beat it. And almost all of the FEMA trailers are already gone!
The places I go seem to have awful things happen just a couple years before or after I've been there.
You'd have to say more about what you enjoy doing on vacations for better input though, at least from me.

Head out west to the Rockies or the Prairies here in Canada or the States; the Rockies are some of the most beautiful places on the North America continent, and the Prairies just take your breath away(note; I was born in Alberta, so yeah... I love my home province/area).

South Africa, despite the fact it'll be living hell with that many tourists, world cup happening in the town where my parents grew up is not something I want to miss.
Though I find it kind of sad that for all the money they put into the unemployment rate is still about 27%.

Ireland
, or
Scotland
.
Oh, and perhaps
Britian
, just to hear people say telly.
FUUUUUUUUUU!
Scotland and Northern Ireland are a part of Britain.
Anywho, I would recommend Xi'an in China, definitely. It's not as smoggy or populated as Beijing or Shanghai, and it mixes the old Chinese culture with the new. Plus, the Terracotta Warriors are only a little while away in a car.
As for where I live, I would not recommend Jersey, at all. It used to be alright, but now it's a bit of a dump. However, the German Underground Hospital (from the WW2 occupation) is a rather interesting site. Similarly, there are ones in Guernsey and Alderney which would have been turned into concentration camps, given the time, apparently.

lol. I actually know Jersey quite well. I've been driving along the GSP and NJT for years, headed for Connecticut and points north. There was once a sweet little nerdtopia called Edmund Scientific which had all kinds of gadgets and instruments which was a playground of cool stuff. I bought a WW2 tank periscope there once.
No....Jersey. Not New Jersey. :P
Edit: I don't like camping, far too messy for me. Friends > family by so many times, when I'm with family it's just awkward.
