Why do people care so much when their posts are down-rated?

I don't understand why some people get so mad when their posts get down-rated. Alright, so they work hard on explaining something and a day later they have a lot of down-rated feedback. Seems pointless to get mad about it since they know they can do nothing about it.
Many of my posts have been down-rated and I don't really care.

In THE OLDEN DAYS there was actually a “karma” system where the total value of your posts modified your karma level, with the idea being that people who make quality posts would have higher karma, etc. etc. Needless to say, this resulted in some people being very upset when their comments were down-ranked and, technically, a group of people could potentially either negatively affect one person’s karma or positively affect all of the karma of their group. Karma was later removed, and properly so! Ultimately DoctorLore’s point is a good one: anger is rarely rational.

I must admit that I do find it funny how people get mad about their comment's being downgraded.

I am a city-leveling bundle of prevarication!
Yes, though, there was a karma system. Great idea in principle. Difficult and challenging in practice; more headche than it's worth. With karma eliminated, posts and comments must survive of their own merit.
Brilliant!
It was called the Wowhead Reputation Bar. Just like in WoW.

I wouldn't mind a karma system so long as people aren't stupid.
Sadly, this will never be the case.
Indeed. I checked a few forums that use it...
My eyes...

I'd like to point out that pretty much every one of my comments has been purged, but I don't mind.
