While I can see how some of this can be beneficial to the company, more publicity, more "buzz" generated towards the game, ect.... This can also have the undesired effect of forcing a company to blow the secret before they want too since this information is already out and about and players are wanting confirmation from a reliable source, in this case the developers themselves. Not really; all that was revealed was information and models from sandboxes, not the actual Alpha client; Blizzard will release it when they are good and ready, not when a fan site decides for them.
Do you consider these websites reputable? Should they only do such things so long as the information they've gathered is confirmed? Or should they not be allowed to post such things, even if a NDA was not in effect, under the guise that it's spoiling content for users and putting undue stress on the Developers?MMOChamp doesn't care; they stopped this time because they didn't want to &*!@ off Blizzard too much; considering what they did before Blizzcon, and how they ramped up that stupid arse rumour from SomethingAwful as 'confirmed' and 'true' information from Blizzard, then didn't retract it when it was revealed as fake... yeah.

An NDA on an alpha is pretty common.
Alpha software can change drastically before it hits beta. Many software companies don't consider features and design finalized during the alpha process, and thus squelch publication of information until the beta, when the design is more finalized.
One of the reasons they do this is to avoid disappointment on the part of consumers. If a fan site published photos or information from the Cataclysm alpha, and people really liked it, but then those features changed drastically, it would cause frustration for the consumer.
I think that MMO-Champion was probably a bit rash in publishing that sort of information. It's public knowledge that the alpha is under an NDA; the only way to obtain information at this point is through Blizzard's releases, violations of the NDA, or violations of software rights (i.e., alpha clients and sandbox servers).

if blizzard wanted to shut down mmo-champion could they?
They can sue the owner, make it unprofitable enough for it to be closed rather than keep sitting in court room.

Yep. Blizzard - Powered by Chuck Norris
And I think they will... soon.

They could... but they won't; again, technically, as much as I dislike MMO-Champ, they didn't break the NDA as, far as I've heard, none of their mods/owners whatever, didn't have an actual Alpha invite, so they were merely sand boxing.
