Arena - starting in Invis?

So, I've been doing some 2v2 with my brother (Ret Pally), in my PvE Arcane spec (whose gear just so happens to have 3 PvP pieces, because Relentless Gladiator > ilvl200 PvE gear).
The strategy that has brought us the best luck at our low rating (after 20 straight losses, we've clawed our way back up to about 800-900 matchmaking rating, I think) - is starting off with Invisibility (especially in the arena with the elevator start), building up some distance, letting the Pally get focused on, then opening up at 36 yards with ABspam. By the time they realise that the damage isn't coming from a Rogue / Druid, find me and start beating on me, one of them is usually dead, and I'll be able to Ice Block and take heals if necessary.
So what I'm wondering is, is this viable at higher ratings? And if we keep doing this, is it a reasonable gearing strat to eschew all PvP gear in favour of more PvE DPS haste/SP gear?
(Do I feel like a glass cannon? Yes. And it's fun.)

No it's not viable on high rating as arcane, when they target ur retri mate they will notice his "focus magic" + ur intellent buff, unless you ofc. dont buff ur mate. Then your enemy would probably think you were a rogue.
And to be honest, the way arcane mages gets blown up in seconds, I would not have my instant invis on cooldown when they start targeting you (and they will when they see ur arcane).
Only setup this would work, would be if you were frost and played with a rogue in 2v2.

Awesome, thanks for the notes. Yes, I have realised at times that it would be nice to have my invis off cooldown, definitely. Guess we'll just keep working on ideas.

My main annoyance with Invis is that you can't see the other team, and it is very nice to have as a oh #$%^ button. I found mounted entrance usually works best for me.

Oh look, we've got a gold seller. /facepalm
Anyway, moving on:
My main annoyance with Invis is that you can't see the other team, and it is very nice to have as a oh #$%^ button. I found mounted entrance usually works best for me.
I got around this by working gauging roughly how far my partner is from me, knowing that the other team will be approximately where he is. Mounted entrance is what I use on most maps, yes.

In all honesty you're gonna get roflstomped. I've ran with a ret pally before. Arcane mage only really works in higher arenas (1500+) if you're running with a rogue (I've always had some success with a survival hunter, but we didn't do more than 50 games.) The way the comp's gonna work is you still want someone putting out CC between bits of DPS. Anyone with a decent rating is going to notice you the moment you come out of invis, they're going to target YOU and you are not going to get a single moment to really free cast. I see alot of matches going with you coming out of invis, your friend getting cc'd twice, and you doing during his trinket cool down.
However, Mage-Retadin is still viable, but I would go frost. I know, you don't wanna go frost, arcane mages will fight, spit, and yell at the idea. But, in all honesty it's worth it once you get the hang of serious pvp. You may wanna try instead of hoping they stay on your slightly tougher friend, that instead you are the one's keeping them in their place. Sheep like a mad man, keep up snares on them, and be ready to counter spell the big heal. Do this, and your retadin will be able to go Super Saiyan on some heiny and they won't be able to get away or heal as effectively though it. Frost's multiple snares will keep them struggling to get away from him and you won't die in two hits.

Heh, yeah, I know. I'm Frost dual-specced (for that lovely problem called levelling), so I'm intending on respeccing that to be a dedicated PvP build, either for BGs (PoM Pyro Arcane build) or arena (Frost cookie cutter), not sure yet.

PoM Pyro's dead man. If you wanna do anything with instant pyro's go deep fire PvP.
You're just as squishy, but atleast you'll be slinging ALOT more pyro blasts than you would with well.... the old school "I win" button.
