I don't bring it up in public voluntarily, just because it isn't something my friends are really interested in. If they ask if I play online games though, I don't deny it.
I'm not ashamed so much as conscious that it's something some people either
a) don't fully understand or
b) don't really care about.

TL;DR People think blowing people up with grenades is cool, while dragon's are not.
Pretty much this.
However what people fail to realize is that you can blow up dragons with grenades.

I think hard-core gamers see WoW as old news. Some can't believe that people still play it.
Outside of the gaming community, people think computer games are stupid and they don't understand why someone has to spend so much time on a computer game.

The real reason that WoW has a bad reputation is because people know the addictive properties of the game, and that the average WoW player dedicates an obscene amount of time to the game.
It's perfectly understandable for people to be wary of those who play this game, and its perfectly understandable to be ashamed, considering how addicting the game is.

It's not something I start a conversation with a girl with, but if they ask I won't lie. If you just say it sounding chilled out and confident, they really don't think much of it.

I also want to point out, that I think it is unfair that people tend to hide their interests for fear of not being accepted or approved by others.
I am a great fan of videogames and heavy metal. Neither of these are openly accepted in mainstream society and both have been labelled as anti-social.
Recently it has really been bugging me, and I really want to just be at peace with what I do in my spare time.
What you do, what you like, what you see beauty in, what brings you joy. These all make a person who they are, they bring flavour to a society.
'Videogames' is a huge, creative, burgeoning culture and I say all of us in this gamer culture should no longer hide in the basement of fear and be awkward and dysfunctional.

Because if you have ever played WoW ever, you are a hopeless addict, spend your entire life on it, have never had a single social interaction in your life, are and forever will be a virgin, are morbidly obese and have never bathed.
Obviously.
People are just idiots. Let them see how that professional football career works out and then let them mow your lawn.
lol. While a bit blunt, it's too true.
Anyway, I'm not embarrassed. People (though I don't know who it might be) could be embarrassed about knowing me, but if they think being nerdy is bad, it's only to my advantage that they don't want to speak to me.
Nerds are the new alpha-males (Big Bang Theory fans represent!).

You still can't deny the fact that the average player of this game spends a LOT of time playing this game compared to other video games.
GENERALLY:
Playing video games isn't healthy, playing WoW means playing more video games...its not a hard conclusion for most to come to.
