Hey all. Well ive been leveling as a Feral DPS (mainly using the LFD tool as its a lot faster). However ive looked online at different quests and a lot of people have said things like "This quest was easy for me. just went into Bear form and ripped everyone apart", or, "Solo'd as a level 45 Druid. Went into Bear form and just Mauled him to death".
Now, i thought Kitty was the DPS form. If so, how are people dealing damage as Bear? Ive never tried to do it on my own but when i tank in dungeons i barely deal any damage to mobs as Bear. I did try fighting as a Bear form the 10 - 20 range, when i didnt have Kitty form, and it was crap.
Thought id also add (though it may be unrelated), in all the WoW books and stuff the druids always turn into a bear to fight, lol

Well, I don't remember too well how Bear form performs while leveling, but what I can say is that when I tank Heroic instances I do this mostly in my DPS gear. When I pop Berserk and Mangle the hell out of a couple of mobs, or just Swipe my way through a very large group of foes, the damage I do
really
adds up!
It's not uncommon that I'm at the top of the DPS list as the tank, even on boss encounters. Often I'm looking at 5k DPS on groups of thrash and up to 3.5k DPS on boss battles. I have loads and loads of Armor Penetration, a very healthy amount of Crit chance and a truckload of Agility in Cat form, and all those stats quite simply carry over to Bear form and have pretty much the same effect..
The downside here being that my health pool in Bear form isn't anything special. In fact, when I try to tank heroic Halls of Reflection I usually fall flat, unless the healer I'm running with is extremely good. The hits I take in there are just too big to overcome sometimes, especially when the mercenaries are in play.
However, between Survival Instincts, Enrage and Frenzied Regeneration, I have managed to tank the first wing of ICC in DPS gear with a health pool most healers would wipe their nose with. I have a guild that's starved for tanks and our healers are happy with me as backup, fortunately.. but it's stressful and not something I would recommend.

Maybe you just fail at bear? I went Feral from the very beginning (of
COURSE
), and Bear form was a rather good way of killing things. A good feral druid knows which form to use when, and doesnt restrict himself to a single form. Sure you can prefer one, but both have their advantages. It generally goes like this:
Cat form to kill single enemies.
Bear form for AoE pwnage and elites.
And i soloed many many big things as a bear back in the day.

Well im far from a good Druid, i know this. Im only level 36. What attacks should i use as a bear and what should my talents be then? My talents are set for Kitty DPS so could anyone help and tell me what they should be? I actually find Kitty DPS hard when leveling so i think i would prefer Bear (If i could do it).

Bear does excellent damage. Especially on 2 mobs, but increasing at a good rate until 10. I managed to solo every 3/5 man quest I came across while levelling, bar one or two. At this point I can solo most heroics without a problem too; with the self heal, and the surprisingly high DPS (4.5-5k - highest of any tank class).

Well what are your talents then? My talents are geared towards Cat and my Bear does bad dps

Due to the two-role nature of feral, most bear specs are almost exactly the same...
My usual tanking spec reads like
this
. There are potentially better specs for this sort of thing, and I know some people like to spec into master shapeshifter or king of the jungle, but it tends to come at a survivability or utility loss. Ultimately, it doesn't matter a whole lot.

Most feral gear is the same for kitty and bear with different enchants and gems.
So you can switch forms and do alright at the opposing role.
People saying they popped bear form for whatever fight or quest probably did so because they needed the damage mitigation of bear form, not so much as pure dps.
My feral is primarily a tank and pulls about 3.2k over the course of a heroic.
That bumps up to about 3.5 when I switch specs.
When I switch specs and gear I'll average 4k with large trash groups up to 6k (and my feral gear is either lower than my tank gear or the same piece and thus enchanted and gemmed wrong).
You can do some decent damage as a bear IF you have rage.
If you're in a group and not tanking, you're not going to hold the rage to dps well, switch to cat form.
If you're soloing there isn't much to stop you :)
