I forgot how much of a pain the "learning" phase can be...

...especially for someone with a massive ego. Halo Reach is coming out in the Fall, so I've been playing Halo 3 again to get my skill level back up, and I had this image of myself just kicking ass and taking names, which is basically been true so far, but apparently some new maps have been added that I have no CLUE about, and instead of taking the time to study the maps (because that's just boring, I want to have a bit of fun between exams) I'm diving head first into them and getting wrecked. I suppose the same thing occurs in WoW and other games where the game can be quite different when you come back than when you left, and its jarring when you left the game as a player who could handle himself in combat. The arena in Wrath, and likely the arena in Cataclysm, is much different than Burning Crusade's arena, so having to learn the ropes again when you were able to handle yourself sort of sucks.
Have you ever gone for a long period of time without playing a game, and came back and found aspects much different?

I remember playing Diablo 2 online back during patch ~1.6. I remember back then that the Summoner Necromancer was one of the best classes, and that's what I spent the majority of my time playing. But, I ended up taking a hiatus from it to play FFX (I think), and I ended up playing a bunch of other games as well. Anyway, when I came back to D2, LoD had already released and patch 1.9 had just come out a week before. I had to make a new character (as I had forgotten my old account info), and of course, I started with a Summoner Necro.
I had not realized the much changed hierarchy of what was good and what wasn't. After playing the Summoner for about 2 weeks, I realized that Summoners were total crap compared to maaany other classes.
I basically had to re-learn to play as the
other
classes and to play a Necro in a completely different way (Corpse Explosion).
I'm glad for it though, or I'd have never appreciated the awesomeness of the Paladin and Druid classes.

It takes me a couple of hours of playthrough to get back to, or close to, my original mastery of play (Unless its a game I used to play all the time, its usually shorter then). Either way, I'm a fan of starting out knowing nothing about the game (The game manuals are a fun thing to read AFTER I'm halfway through the game), so coming back to a game after a break usually excites me enough to relearn everything.
