Its hard to say, honestly. It partly depends on the type of tank tanking, and whether or not they popped their own cooldowns, a bad string of RNG can kill you too, missed Aegis crits from you or missed block/dodge/parry from the tank. Also, since there is very little raid damage at the level where the tanks take the most damage, you should be getting assitance from the other healer, but if say he/she had to move to absorb a spore (it happens), you could have been caught solo healing at a bad moment.
Did you use Pain Suppresion on the high tank damage (third inhale) phase?

When Festergut has 3 inhales it's almost impossible for one healer to keep a tank up.
In 10 man it might be more doable with a Holy Paladin in conjunction with their 2pc. t10 bonus (35% more heals) and avenging wrath (20% more heals).
Your raid leader probably just didn't know what the hell they were doing.
A competent raid leader never tells a disc priest "YOU ARE ON TANK HEAL DUTY"
This is why you bring holy paladins to the raid. ^&*!, even a resto shaman is better, IMO.
That doesn't mean you don't renew them, bounce PoM off them, and bubble them every opportunity, and send a Penance their way when they drop suddenly. That is what you are there for: to ensure that nobody dies

I recently was responsible for healing the tanks during the Festergut encounter on 10 man. I was unable to heal the tanks and they would die.
So what your telling me, and what everyone else seems to be picking up on, is
you
were on the tanks.
No one
else. To be quite frank, I find the idea of assigning healers to be retarded. Have
primary focuses
if you want, but a healing absolute in this regard is setting the raid up for failure.
I personally haven't seen "assigned healing" be anything but an annoyance since raiding in Naxx, because either the person assigning it has no clue what he/she is doing or they are stating the obvious. While a disc priest is quite proficient at single-target spams, if you never throw a heal out to raid, you are fail; if the other healers don't throw a heal on the tank, they are fail.
I put the blame on the RL this time for not understanding the nature of healing and still expecting others to listen to his/her advice.
The only time I would consider healing assignments warranted is when range becomes an issue, which obviously does not apply in this case.

This is very simple. Chances are 1. your raidhealer wasnt assisting you (IE: He's doing it wrong), 2. your tank dont know when to pop CDs(IE: He's also doing it wrong), 3. your raidleader positioned the healers badly(IE: He's also doing it wrong)
being assigned to something doesnt mean you are to only heal this. it means you are to FOCUS on that.
