DoT Refreshing
With the advent of T10 gear and the 3.3.3 patch, our DoT's have fared rather poorly. For the most part, they are barely even worth casting, except for the benefit provided by the Improved Insect Swarm talent. The main exception is if you are still using 2T9 set bonus, in which case Moonfire is good and should be reapplied whenever it drops. The same is true of Glyph of Insect Swarm, but as described in the Glyphs section above, this Glyph will probably no longer be used by most players.
In general, you want to cast one DoT as each Eclipse ends: Insect Swarm as Lunar Eclipse ends (so it's up for most of the ensuing Solar), and Moonfire as Solar Eclipse ends (so it's up during Lunar and gets extended with Glyph of Starfire). In a change from earlier rotations, all of your refreshing should be done outside of Eclipse--cast the DoT right as Eclipse ends, before you start your pre-Eclipse nukes for the next half-cycle. Make sure to refresh at least one DoT after each Eclipse, so you keep your buff.
In cases if movement or other interruptions, your DoT refreshing may not be precisely on schedule. Try to cast Insect Swarm anytime you're in pre-Solar phase, and Moonfire anytime it will be extended by Glyph of Starfire (i.e. in pre-Lunar, Lunar, or the second half of Solar).
There's one other nuance you can work in to your play once you're comfortable with the rotation. Ordinarily, when you proc an Eclipse, you have to cast one extra Wrath or Starfire before switching spells, due to the fact that you queue your next spell before seeing whether Eclipse procs. If you have a DoT to refresh, you can cast that instead, and use the GCD to see whether Eclipse procced. This way, the DoT only replaces the weak "wrong" spell during the Eclipse instead of delaying Eclipse or replacing an Eclipsed nuke. For example, if Lunar is just ending, you can cast one extra Starfire and then Insect Swarm. During the GCD from the Insect Swarm, watch to see whether the Starfire crit (it's actually useful to watch for Nature's Grace, as that buff will appear before the Solar Eclipse will). If it did, you can immediately switch to Wrath for your next spell. This should become second nature eventually.

The GM of my guild who's main is a pally tank, but has like a ton of alts, one being a boomkin, would ALWAYS laugh at me and my spec, especially of me specing into the ImpIS and the 1 point in OF. He would always say that IS is stupid and he never uses it and hardly ever used MF either. I would just laugh back and tell him he's dumb and should listen to the person who only has 1 80 and knows each spec of their class inside and out. He kept being amazed of the 10K+ dps I would pull in ICC25 with a "stupid spec". One day he decided that he wanted to change some points around in his moonkin spec, and i finally convinced him to spec into Imp IS, and to actually put the dots up, only need to have MF up during lunar eclipse, and IS up during Solar eclipse. He went and played on the test dummy, and came back totally surprised at how much more dps he did in general, and how much more damage his wrath did.
Moral of the Story: Spec into Imp IS and actually USE IT. I personally try to keep IS up as much as possible, but ofcourse not refreshing during eclipse procs. but i also have 1 point in genesis, which i see alot of people not specing into.
And to you glyph questions... I used to use glyph of MF, IS, and SF, but i changed out the IS swarm for Starfall because 1. starfall got a buff and does crazy damage, and 2, i was the only boomkin in the raid and the glyph took away the hit thing. When we got another boomkin in the guild, she used Focus, MF, SF and she never say any damage increase of her starfall compared to mine, so she switched focus to IS. so, it's up to you what you really want and what your play style is.

i try to keep both dots at near 100% uptime and i put out great dps. i can not see my self doing more dps without applying either since aside from the innate damage they do, they also bring other buffs (like wrath doing more damage when IS is up, SF more crit with MF, etc). usually im on board with EJ, but i just cant get past my gut feeling and raid experience to drop my DoTs

hmm its making more sense to me...but im still not convinced the 2 gcds i use refreshing dots are better on 2 wraths or 1 starfire. i guess dummy testing will have to commence, but i would think over the course of the fight having near 100% up time on the dots (hey, come on, they arent that weak =[ ) would more than make up for not casting 2x wraths of 1 sf.
theres just something in my inner-moonkin saying not keeping the dots up is wrong. guess i gotta test it out and roll with the punches; this seems to be the cata rotation too, so better get used to it. cast 1 dot, spam 1 nuke, shroom, then switch. or something like that...got plenty of time for the eggheads to figure out a cata rotation when that launches hah.
any indication how much this - refreshing both dots vs. this method - raises dps btw? b/c currently i have no mana issues and my dps is pretty darn high for my gearscore (usually #1 on recount tab for gs vs performance and 1 or 2 in damage and dps on bosses in icc).

I say my average Starfire crit with eclipse is around 17-18k even tho i do see 20-22k crits, but they're just not all the time. My average Wrath crit with solor eclipse is 14-17k. So they can hit as much as starfire with the 1sec cooldown instead, so that's alot of dps in 12s give or take.
I guess it just depends on your gear and how much crit you have

FF > MF > Wrath til Lunar Eclipse > Starfire til end of Lunar Eclipse > IS > Starfire til Solar Eclipse > Wrath til end of Solar Eclipse > repeat from MF.
Les I would still council using IS and MF for the lead off to get the idol and possibly spyglass if you have it stacked faster. This also has a side benefit of giving a tank time to get enough of a threat lead to allow you to go all of out even on really gimmicky fights.
But this is strictly about the lead in not the rotation itself, lol.

just wondering if anyone could give an expected dps gain by switching rotation style....
stats - in moonkin, with only motw:
3054 sp w/o spyglass stacked
hit capped (with draenei)
35.74 crit w/o idol stacked
879 haste
glyphs are starfall, starfire, moonfire. dropped IS after reading EJ a while back about how it wasnt as good anymore...plus im sure some tanks like 3% more avoidance.
sooo lets say i can do ~9.5-10k dps on 10m festergut trying to maintain max DoT uptime. would there be a noticeable gain from switching? any idea how much the gain would be?
another thing, i would also recommend applying both DoTs for the lead in just to get spyglass and idol up to full strength faster, and give tank(s) a better threat lead.
when and how exactly did our DoTs lose their luster =/
oh and to whomever said they use 1/5 genesis....last i heard that talent is *!@#, and that was before ICC and our, apparent, 'crap' DoTs. so i can only imagine how bad it is now post 3.3. i had read that 1/3 moonglow > 1/5 genesis. oh and if you already have 1/3 MG and still end up with 1/5 genesis you're missing out somewhere.

K sounds good. Gonna have to keep working on utilizing the new rotation and maximize the gains.
