If you're backstabbing then you're using daggers and thus an Assassination spec (most likely).
For aggro loss all you have is vanish and
feint
.
If you can position, use backstab as you've probably talented for it, if not use Sinister Strike. A combat rogue would just sinister strike and most people don't bother with backstab due to positional requirements. It might be easier just to use SS and
glyph
it so, with some RNG love, you can build combo points faster.
You can either build points for damage and finish with Eviscerate or for melee haste with Slice and DIce. Your other finishers aren't really worth it at this point.
If there will be more targets after this one, try to keep slice and dice up for that, otherwise just Eviscerate for damage.
Give this a shot but test a mix and see how it goes for you. It's hard to be certain of best practices at a growing level.
At 18 your hunter 'friends' got
Multishot
so start getting some multimob damage that you don't have. Take that into account for trash dps comparisons.

Solution: go combat and mop the floor with everyone. Any spec besides combat is inferior for leveling. Hit 80, then play what you want.

I also wouldn't worry about DPS in lower level dungeons. People are AoE crazy these days, and lets face it rogues have nothing really until you pick up FoK. So other classes will murder your dps on trash, but you should be better on single target bosses.
totally. In dungeons, the mobs can die so fast now you can't even get a 5pt Evis off. Its the Boss damage that counts in the end, after all he's the one that drops the phat lewt ;)
But I think feint can be a good thing when you need it. It drops your aggro and reduces the damage you take, just know when to use it withyour other skills so you can manage your energy. Stopping Dps or changing targets isn't always the best option, especially if a certain mob requires interupts or has to die first (castsers/healers), there is no other target to switch to, or you want the mob to actually die in a reasonable amount of time ;) Just make sure you are allowing the tank to get aggro for a few secs before you attack the first selected target as rogues climb the threat meters rather easily
Feint is crap until you get the highest rank, and even then it's used for reduced aoe damage and not threat reduction. Unless they seriously buffed the threat reduction on feint, it only reduces aggro by the equivalent of a sinister strike hit as combat.
Now, if you're doing dungeons, wait for the tank to get proper control of a target, then dps. Make a macro that does /assist tankname. Also, if you still pull aggro, you have tools. Evasion tank the mob yourself, vanish, or throw a full kidney shot. You're a rogue, act like it! Most stuff in dungeons isn't immune to our abilities, so keep that in mind. Mob breaks from sap and goes after your healer? Blind his ass. And so on and so on.
