I'm probably in the minority here but I play fairly close (screenshot here:

). I don't really need an overview of the whole fight, and a closer camera makes for more precise positioning on bosses.

Depending on the fight, I can be up close to as far out as it will go. In general, I am somewhere in the middle range. The situational awareness of zooming out helps in movement and target switching fights a lot. Too bad my crappy connection won't deal with being zoomed out on Ony 25 in the early whelp burn phase. So, I zoom in then to reduce lag and my chance to be DCed.

tl;dr: Depends on the situation.
I changed my max camera distance using: /script SetCVar("cameraDistanceMax",30)
This makes it such that I can zoom out way beyond the distance I would care to actually use in raid. How far I am zoomed out varies significantly depending on the fight. For example, I like an overhead view & being zoomed out far enough to see the whole room on Rotface so that I can always see where the big ooze is should I get the infection debuff. Saurfang is a good example of the opposite...I don't really care about much else that is happening as long as I know that the blood beasts are out of range for KS, so I am zoomed in much closer.
It takes some experience to determine what you need to know to keep situational awareness and not be distracted by things that truly don't matter; but having the option to move your camera out, way out, can help you learn that.
Of course, your hardware and connection has to be able to handle being zoomed out that far. Since you normally play a caster, this is not news to you.

Doom, if you don't mind, can you list what mods/UI's you have. I absolutely love your setup but have always been afraid to try something new.

Mostly it's a modified version of TukUI (for the map, unit frames, chat, bottom grey bars).
The ActionBars are Dominos. I have them positioned like that because they map to the keys on my keyboard, the middle block is Home/End/Del/Ins/pgUp/pgDn the right block is the number pad. Yes I play with the arrow keys :P

I run most of my characters at about 2/3 max normal camera distance.
In PvP (BGs), I'm zoomed in quite abit so I don't get disoriented when I hit tunnels / tower / doorways / etc.
Also, I think it feels a bit more personal have that closer zoom in PvP.
My rogue is my only melee character I PvP with so not sure if I'd use the same camera distance in PvP for other melee classes.

Thank you very much. I am a reforming keyboard turner (arrow keys, as well) like you. I still use them in instances but I am practicing with using the mouse to move whenever I get the chance; world and PvP. The biggest pain in the ass is moving backwards and I am going to have to fix that as it wastes a couple of seconds of combat time if I overshoot a target. I just freed up the 'Z' key so maybe I can bind that to walk backwards or I can buy a non-crappy mouse.
All in all, my UI is a cluttered mess and once I add IceHud, recount, and the proprietary quest tracker (still going for Loremaster) I have very little room left for, ya know ... the actual game!
I will give it a whirl later.

Is the 'S' key that is bound to walk backward insufficient, or did you change the default keybind for 'S'?

Yeah, when I started years ago, I ate up the WASD keys in exchange for the arrow keys. Now that I am getting away from it, I should take a second look at things. As it is, I have Premed at 'A' and Shadowstep at 'S' and, respectively, Cold Blood and Hunger for Blood.
'Z' was stealth but I found a macro video on YT that recommended tacking on stealth to your mashable abilities (envenom, evis, SS, hemo, etc) and that is beautiful.
We'll see. I have to make changes gradually because I already suck at pvp as it is!

Nice. A 50pt AND a 40pt talent. A+ for 90+ TPs.
...
Come on now, think a bit. I know it is fun to pick on the noob, but it helps if you wait for them to actually screw up. The word "respectively" should've been the clue that I am dual-specced. Next time, I promise I will spell it out for you. I just didn't want to be too long-winded. Maybe I am getting too old?
We shall see about the other part you brought up; sounds valid. I hopped on last night and made these changes and ran Oculus then logged off so I haven't run that scenario. Seems like a reasonable concern.

So, basically, you cant restealth if you're near anything attackable. Or you can waste stealth CD's (6 seconds is still 6 seconds) by periodically stealthing while out of range of a target, or having bleeds.
If this works for you, go crazy man, because I would hate that. It's like binding Sprint to 'w' for me, while still making it move you forward "my character would constantly be reassuring me that 'that ability isn't ready yet.' Horrible.
FYI, I am not having the first problem, but I am having the second one. I'll leave combat before my brain figures it out and I'll stealth. In order to keep up with the tank, I have to unstealth and, like you said, six seconds is a long time in the grand scheme of things and the tank is usually engaging another target by then.
