yes and no. your friend is wrong, but you are still kinda wasting your time at level 62 :/
at that level, things just don't hit you enough to worry about it much. you are much better using your GCD on a thunderclap, shockwave, revenge, etc.
even at max level, bosses do have AP, and you can reduce it with demo shout. in fact, with 5/5 improved demo, you can reduce the boss's AP to zero. at that point, they will still hit you for weapon damage, but depending on the fight, the difference can be significant.

Get a hunter to use
beast lore
on whatever beast mobs are in the instance you're doing. That will show how much AP they have.
This method is the one that was used to confirm that Maexxna in Naxx has ~574 AP and that it is reduced to zero by a fully talented demo shout. Other WotLK raid bosses are assumed to have the same amount of AP (and some other bosses may have been tested since, I just haven't noticed it if so).

I do believe the typical damage reduction is around 15-20%. As long as the boss' physical damage is an important part of the fight, the difference is huge.
But it's true that at level 62 there's usually no need for demo shout since things don't hit hard anyway.

What kind of threat does demo. shout produce? Any?
63 threat split between the affected mobs.

In the past demo shout used spell hit, what made for a good lot resists. At the moment it uses melee hit, intended or else.

Most likely intended, since blizz don't like physical classes having to gear for full spellhit as well as a decent chunk of expertise.

At 7 rage its a barely noticeable drain on your rage. Biggest issue is actually the CD loss. I like your idea with the macro. Probably gona do the same when i get home.
It reduces damage taken and thus reduces rage gain by potentially far more than its direct rage cost.

how sure are you of this? i still see my demo shout miss more than it should if it used melee hit rating.

He's probably thinking of T-Clap. It just got switched from a spell to a ranged attack.
Yea, my demo still misses quite a bit, which #$%^es me the hell off when im using a free global with zero returns... WTB vindication pally!
As to the remark about building good tanking habits early, i cannot stress that enough. My guild's prot wars really go the extra mile to help the raid using their demo shouts and shattering throws, it does not go unnoticed :)
