To make a long story short, my guild recently had some changed and our guild leader up and quit without transferring the leader position. Is there a way to transfer leadership to someone else in the guild without convincing him to pick up WoW for a short time to do it himself? Or are we gonna have to be all quit the guild and form a new one with a different leader? Thanks.

Stop being wrong. If the leader is inactive for a month or more, a GM can transfer leadership.
Correct, I've used this option. The guild leader had been absent for 2 months, so we asked a GM to transfer it to a particular of our officers. The GM transferred the guild leader title to the officer that had been the longest in the guild, not the officer we pointed to, but the new guild leader transferred the reigns to the officer we had all agreed on, so no drama there..
So it seems that once your guild leader has been missing for more that a month you can ask to have the leadership changed to the most veteran officer.
It sounds like you have to get a sympathetic GM. I submitted a ticket to try and get leadership of the guild I used to run transferred from my former roommate, who had quit the game and left us stuck with her character as guild leader.
The first ticket got closed and I was told they could not do anything, even if the former leader's account was inactive; I opened a new ticket and the second time the GM transferred it (although he did mention specifically that they aren't required to do so).
So if you get rejected the first time, try again!

That's just horrible GM service right there.

Soooo... much... drama...
Guilds generally last about 6-9 months TOPS
Then there is always some guy who gets a power trip lol
remember though...
I(t is just a game. It isn't worth destroying friendships... especially those in real life. Even if
you met then in game , then they became R/L friends.

LOL... Our guild was started in 1997. We have been through several different MMO's before landing in WoW....UO, Star Wars Galaxies, ect.
