The Huntard...

IMO, it's a combination of it being a VERY easy class to play and the pet. Once you get your pet you just pewpewpew (sure, any class is easy to level, but not everyone has a DK or BoAs... and some classes can be a pain to level to certain people).
And with the pet, the idea of taming a variety of beasts IS cool.
Is it really that easy though? I'm in the process of leveling a hunter myself,
she's level 57
at the moment. When I first hit level 10 I started out with Beast Mastery and I found that no matter how I arranged my rotation, if I used any kind of shot besides
Auto-Shot
I would inevitably pull aggro off my pet, even in Beast Mastery spec. Maybe it's because I'm up to my neck in heirlooms, but it was tough to deal with at times. Especially in the early stages, when the only form of crowd control you have is
Concussion Shot
and a trap.
What I'm trying to say is, if you're just going to have your pet attack a mob and then stand there and do nothing, then yes, it's an easy class to play and level up to 80. If, however, you're going to be very active about your rotation, implementing all your skills and trying to do what DPS you can, then you're sometimes going to have a hard time soloing until you get
Misdirection
at level 70. You WILL pull aggro off your pet (or worse, the tank) and find yourself having to deal with that situation over and over. If you're a fast killer like me you won't have
Feign Death
up every fight, nor will
Disengage
be off cooldown all the time. Sometimes you just have to get tricky about it.
I think what seperates a hunter from a huntard is whether or not the player can deal with situations like these, whether it is in solo/group play, 5-man instances or raids. As for myself, I'm not sure into which category I fit. I'm leveling Marksmanship now and between my heirlooms and home-made macros, I kill mobs so fast in solo play they hardly ever get to me at all. I think I'll have to see how I perform once I hit Northrend and get access to the dungeons I know best, so I can do some proper comparing.
As to the question what appeals people so about the hunter class.. it was the pet mechanic for me. The philosophy of going it alone in the wilderness, with only your trusted animal companion there to help keep you alive. It was the videos of hunters kiting Fel Reavers all across Outland, or doing pulls of 10+ mobs and then raining stingy death on them. Hunters
are
can be epic, a real asset to any team, and I know I want to be.

I adore my hunter. After hitting 70 with my priest, I leveled her MM, switched to Surv (yup during BC, personal issues with the whole BM having my pet be my tank and not pulling my weight etc etc). Wrath came out, leveled Surv to 80, switched back to MM cuz I missed it! I got yelled at in a H HOR for using traps on the mage and hunter spawns.... O_O. Tank got $%^&ed because I was "taking his aggro" on those mobs... Part of the huntard misconception comes from this crap, being called a huntard for actually using my abilities and the things the class was made for. The healer actually initiated the kick on that particular tank. I HAVE seen a few hunters that have made extremely questionable choices in gear, but instead of helping those people, the members of the WoW community ingame tend to rip on them instead. My husband and I actually ran into a hunter during our questing who had made her gear almost entirely from shaman caster and druid caster gear. Lots of SP and mana regen. We spent almost 2 hours with her talking about how she should be running gear, how to make up for mana usage, etc.
IMO instead of ripping on inexperienced players, people who are just playing for fun, kids who think having a hunter is a blast for the pet, try to help em out. If they are entirely resistant to it yeah there's not much you can do, but even saying "hey this will help out with those people ripping on you" tends to sway most of them.
That being said, when I'm playing my healer, if its not my husband on his hunter (he screws around all the time to make heroics more interesting for me healing), I do tend to notice the occasional idiot hunter who won't wait for the tank (on purpose, not the accidental pet pull we've all done) and won't own up to simple mistakes, causing the people in the group to assume its idiot hunterism and not a simple mistake.
I try to own up to my huntard mistakes (I've started the pull on Champions before getting my pet set up to attack the lock pet and accidentally shift clicking without realizing that was a preset macro for attack target heh) and most people are pretty understanding of that. A lot of the issues do come from good hunters+*!@#ty "tanks" who think that cuz they have a shield they can tank. But with the desperation for queues, there are a large amount of those!
Whew long post sorry!

So the moral of the story, one dk's suck (sorry guys =) and two, we get blamed for the stupidest things.
Seriously? You're perpetuating the same stereotype against DKs that is perpetuated against us. I hope you realize how ridiculous you sound for debasing an entire class and expecting others to take hunters as a class seriously.

...I'd be getting after you if you
weren't
using traps in HoR - that instance is perfect for traps! Just MD-Volley, and the threat should take care of itself. You can always FD if you pull threat...
This... seriously.. I had an amazing H-HoR pug (first one on my hunter i think) a few days ago. It consisted of a bear, rogue, fury warrior, myself (marks), and shaman healer. First thing druid said was "crap, no CC".. to which I replied with a link to freezing arrow. he was like "oh *!@#, i didn't know hunters could do that. Can you take care of the mages/riflemen then?" Mages would get priority, but I had already planned on it.
Long story short, group went exceedingly well, and I pulled top dps even while firing a freezing arrow at least once per pack. Druid whispered me saying he wished more hunters were like me and not all "lol failtankisfail"... blah.

It's only time to cringe when your DK tank uses
Death Grip
every pull
(the ability produces absolutely no threat, and only forces one target to attack the tank).Other than that, MD the DK tank as usual, and
don't
FD at the first sign of trouble!
No argument there, but my point is that one can hardly expect to be taken seriously as a hunter when he says things like "dks suck", obviously meaning it as
"ALL dks suck"
. Every tank has the opportunity to be terrible and every tank has the opportunity to be good. Just as healers do, just as DPSers do. If you're marginalizing an entire class based on a few bad experiences then you're an idiot plain and simple. I've had good DK tanks and bad ones. I've had good warrior tanks and bad ones. I've had good pally tanks and bad ones. It really makes no difference just because it's the "flaver of the week" class.

There has been quite a few times playing where the huntard stigma has cause me no end of problems. I have had (luckily) a really helpful mentor who wasn't afraid to smack me upside the head and show me the ropes. So, I never went through the issues that most new players face because I could ask him my stupid (looking back now they really were) questions. But despite this, I have had people point the finger and scream huntard for a wipe. My response is to tell them to look back through the combat log and let's see if it is. (This was, of course, back before the LFD system) The tank would promptly kick me out for being a smart@ss and I would be forced to once more try and pug up another Ramps/BRD/Sunken Temple group.
At least when I hit 80 the worst of it stopped, now they just won't invite hunters to raids. I am sure everyone has sent a tell for an invite and had the raid lead say "srry full" then go straight back to advertising for 3 more DPS. I am crossing my fingers for a better LFR system.
edit: spelling....ugh...

Low level hunters in dungeons are 99.999% total retards who pull everything and use melee, that's why people were hating on you.
Hey thanks for jumping in. Glad to see you only read the first post. There's actually a conversation going on throughout the rest. You could even participate in that if you wanted!
And I doubt the percentage is THAT high. Since most problems actually stem from fail tanks or healers.
You may be right though, I'll assume you're an expert statistician and have been documenting cases of supposed "Huntardedness" for a college thesis paper. And I'll also assume I know everything about you. How's your sociology major coming along? Are you still planning on getting into law school? How was your trip to Spain?
No need to reply, seeing as I already know everything about you. And I know what your response would be.
*Ignore my rant, too much coffee today. For some strange reason I'm proud of it, so I decided to click Submit anyway. I'm just a dbag! :)

I once got into an RFK run on my tankadin where the huntard in question immediately said something along the lines of "guyz i cna tank this kk" and proceeded to distracting shot any mob i came near. After a while we managed to kill him and he left, still remains to this day the most odd thing i have seen in the LFD system.
