Neither is "better", they are just different...
Combat shines in moving fights, multiple target fights...
ie, Blood Princes...
Combat is has more cooldowns and more burst...
Muti shines on single target boss fights...
ie, Saurfang...
it has more ramp up time to get to the rotation up to its max dps,
so switching targets gimps it compared to combat...
Combat brings a 4% Savage Combat buff to the raid...
Muti will probably do a little more damage and dps for the entire raid
if all things are equal...
both are viable raid specs...
Play what you like...
Myself, I have always been combat, I like the style, and
my weapons are much better for combat...

They both perform close enough that the average player should really use what he has weapons for.

I agree with the above poster in that mutilate, when using the right rotation, can get better dps at lower gear wise. I've played both combat and Mutilate specs and at first i didn't like my combat spec cause i didn't seem to build up combo points as fast. But with combat spec in ICC on trash i was able to hit my blade flurry and then killing spree with my slice and dice up and was able to get my dps up to a whopping 10k...before i pulled aggro and got killed XD.
So there both really good specs it's just all about your own personal opinion.

i can't work out whether this is a new poetic form, like a modern day haiku, or if the OP just thinks that ellipsis is the answer to every punctuational situation...

Perhaps a SLIGHTLY contriversial view but i'm pretty sure combat starts to pull MARGINALLY ahead in the hands a rogue equally skilled with each at ICC gear levels.
Generally tho another +1 to the "play whichever you prefer".

In PvE both are good. In PvP Combat suckass...
a 4/52/15 type spec ex:

isn't horrible but you're right that there's much better specs out there. Better off with a cold blood/shadowstep spec if you don't have any daggers.

If he is new , which it sounds like he may be.
Mutilate is pretty awful if you are running 5 man heroics attempting to gear up. The ramp up time is a killer and you will be lucky to get hfb and snd up and an envenom before stuff dies. Plus if you are trying to stealth toward mobs for overkill and to use garrote you will be left behind.
In the long run I would think that Combat is better until raids. Just mash buttons and you do better than someone trying to set mutilate up.
