You do not need to level as Ret. You can level as Prot from lvl 1, technically 10 when you get your fist talent point. But it is a little easier to level as Ret prior to lvl 40 where you really start picking up your good tanking talents, namely
Holy Shield
. Personally my first talent point was in the Prot tree and I had no problems.
Our
Bible
starts with a lvl 30 build. Just use it as a reference and you'll be good.

Switch to prot when Holy Shield becomes available. Before that, grab a shield and tank in ret. The survivability won't be radically different from speccing prot now, but the threat will be dramatically improved.

And you have heirloom gear, you can run lots and lots of dungeons. You will be first in line since you will be tanking.

I don't believe prot is as mana efficient as ret in lvling. And you don't kill things quite as quick either.
Pull more mobs. *Links Squish's thread*
At lower levels though, there's really nothing prot can do that ret can't do better.

im about the same lvl as mgjr. my main is a range dps so i tried to lvl a melee class. i have BOA gears too. axe, chest, shoulder as well as that crit trinket. i have mostly all lvl28 pvp gears in her and sometimes do random dungeon. i like to pvp w/ her but i was thinking of getting prot as another spec when i hit 40, since its seems to be faster to queue as a tank in random dungeons. ty
btw as a prot what BOA gears do u need?

I would advise you to go Prot as soon as possible. There's nothing bad in grasping the tank basics as early as possible. Especially if you have as least spells to use as possible to learn their value and possibilities.
first off the tanking basics don't start till 40 when you get holy shield. up to that point you'll be attempting to hold agro with SoR, consecrate, judgements, and your taunts. imo...get seal of command at 20. then start putting points into prot if your worried about survival. most of the dmg mitigation talents are all at the top anyway and ret also gets 5% parry. when you hit 40 then i'd say you could switch to prot and get holy shield. with HS you atleast have a chance of holding agro on multiple mobs against players with heirlooms. i have a 48 mage with full heirlooms and no prot paly has been able to hold agro yet. i sit and wait till consecrate disappears the first time before dropping my blizzard. like every mage i'm specced fully into blizzard however unlike other mages i put all improved slowing so that tanks have a chance to get agro back (at the cost of more dmg of course) but so far the only tanks that can hold are druids (of course) and ret palys.
i'm lvling my paly atm and going ret till SoC. then putting the rest in prot. i'll probably switch to a full prot build at 50-60. probably 50 so i can mess around with avenger shield.
