I also believe people would want a 3-seater, big brown turd that Blizzard classifies as a scaling mount. I don't mean to say that people bought the mount to conform; I mean to say that Blizzard can sell anything and people will buy it (like
sheeple
).
I find it hard to believe that people are willing to spend 25$ on a game to try and "be cool".
And I find it hard to believe the convenience it provides is worth $25. If it's really worth $25 because it's pretty, then hack the game's models on the client side and ride it all you want.
In that context, then yes, that would be like sheeple.
Your opinion is your opinion though. Just because you don't think it's worth it, doesn't mean the next guy won't.
You just refuse to see how people could like it, or would be willing to spend the $25 on it.
To be honest, I'm not sure why you care.
So people are willing to spend the $25 on it. Let us. Keep your $25. Go enjoy your (any other form of entertainment) and we'll enjoy ours.

But if anyone thinks eventually they will sell epics or leveling for money, your playing the wrong game.
RAF programme allowing someone to recruit themselves as their own friend pay money for a 2nd game and gametime and get triple xp up to 60 and level giveaways up to 60 from the recruited account.
That's selling levels for RL money, Oh and a mount to boot.
1-60, not any higher.

I wouldnt say its game changeing, gives the new players something cool to have. I mean look at all the cool pets you cant get anymore that some of the classic players got.
Anyway I say if you wanna spend your money on cosmetics go ahead. Wow is a game, not a job.

Me, i just think buying stuff with irl money encourages the "must have nao with no work at all" mentality, which is bad for the game in general.
Edit : i really hope they'll never make us buy "new zones and mobs, but don't worry they're purely cosmetic"

People already pay $10 for pets.
Poeple already pay $25 for mounts.
What else will people pay real $$$ for?
Honestly? Anything. Even if Blizzard announced tomorrow morning that we can now get a fresh lv80 of any class with a full set of armor for a fee, at least
some
players would fork out for it. And that still wouldn't really change anything to other players' game play, it'd still be completely optional, but it'd make a mess every time there's a new FotM class (sorta kinda).
Hypothetically, Blizzard wouldn't go that far because we would technically spend less money on the subscription fee while we level a new character; there are probably tons of ways around that to keep it profitable, I'll leave that to Blizzard.
The only thing I would hate to happen is if Blizzard would go down the road of selling something that truly makes your character better vs those who don't shell out; for example's sake imagine you could get 10 extra talent points on any given character for $20-30-whatever. That would be game-breaking.

I think the major confusion here is the difference between an item "having an effect" on the game, and one "giving an advantage" in the game.
There is nothing wrong with items that "have an effect" in terms of inspiring a little envy, marking a person as having bought a collector's edition or traveled to blizzcon, or having done some random marketing promotion.
At best, they're fun little perks for people who like the pets and mounts, at worst, they get used as status symbols by people with too little to think about in life- the same people who throw around the woord "noob" like there's some kind of dishonor in being new or not good at a game, or hold literal grudges against people who play the opposite faction. Those people would find something to use in the same fashion if the pets weren't there, because it doesn't matter what nonsense u use if it's all nonsense.
None of it, however, gives you any advantage in terms of skll, dps, gear, progression, etc. People need to find something better to fight about.

Listen, any sociologist will tell you that just by living in an environment you become more accepting of it. We are now "living" in an environment where buying in game goods for real money is acceptable practice, where it once wasn't.
You can see how this can lead the population to (eventually) not only accept, say, armor for cash but actually clamor for and desire it.
An example of a way this has worked in a positive way in the past.
In the U.S. :
Slavery was acceptable > then segregation > then racism > today none of these are acceptable
Is WoW the only MMO youve ever played? Cause if it isnt then you should know that selling cosmetic things has been pretty regular for awhile now, been playing MMOs since 98 and this is nothing new to me or anyone who has played other MMOs besides WoW

I bought the pets, because I collect the pets.
I bought the mount because I liked the look of it.
I have the cash to buy these cheap items.
Does it change my gameplay? Apart form showing off (which is odd, as these items impress no-one): no.
Would I work as hard for t10 if they looked exactly like t9? Probably. In normal RPG's there is no description of your gear. It's only the stats that matter.
A sword that glows when orcs are near? Rubbish. Not only doesn't it detect the other 99.99999999999999999999999% of the world's creatures, it gives away your position when nearing orcs by glowing.
A +1 sword. Not great, but can make the difference. What the &%*%^%$& do I care what it looks like exactly?
Although players probably have an idea what the PC looks like in his/her gear.

Hello all,
The horse is dead stop beating it. Yes they sold a mount and I was surprised.
No it does not affect gameplay.
I can say from experience that no matter what you've heard about girls and flashy rides Yogg Saron does not care what mount you rode into Ulduar.
/kneel
/beg
Please move on. Its a cosmetic change.

I don't have enough brain for a wordy response, but I do have this to say. The most recent thing from the pet store does impact me. That stupid &^$% Celestial Steed makes me want to hit everyone I see who's on one. But that's about it. I don't care how useful it is, it still doesn't look nearly as good as many other mounts, or as much as it COULD. The head doesn't even look like a horse's.
I did almost give in and blow $25 on the baby wind rider + plush, but I'm glad I didn't. It's cute, but not THAT cute. I spend enough money I don't really have on this game as it is.
